ebay question

Have a laptop I listed on eBay. Never sold on eBay before(FWIW). I listed the item for a 3 day auction.

Last night sometime(last day of auction) someone bought it for my 'buy it not' price.

I also noticed this email/message from eBay:

The results of the following listing(s) have been cancelled due to bidding activity that took place without the account owner's authorization:

item number here XXXXX

We have cancelled the listing(s) to maintain the integrity of the eBay site, your account, and the bidder?s account that was accessed. We are working to restore the bidding account to its rightful owner, and we are working with the account owner to prevent any additional unauthorized activity. Since the account owner did not initiate these bids, all fees resulting from the listings in question will be credited to your account within 7 days. If you do not see the credits posted to your account after 7 days, please feel free to contact us through ?Contact Us? in our Help section.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to automatically relist these items for you. Instead, to relist these items you will need to start from the beginning of the listing process, either through the "Sell Your Item" process or through your third party listing service. We know that this is an inconvenience and we apologize for the negative impact it may cause you. We are working on tools to allow you to relist your items without starting from the beginning, but they are not available at this time.

Do not respond to this email, as your reply will not be received. If there are issues that have not been addressed by this message, you can contact us by clicking the "Help" link located at the top of most eBay pages and selecting "Contact Us" from the menu on the left hand side of the page.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

So I assumed I would just re list it later this evening. I just got another notice with it saying this:

Dear eBay Community Member,
This message was originated from the eBay and PayPal team. We apologize for the cancellation of your eBay Item, it was formally canceled due an Error 908 on the eBay Data Base. The eBay & PayPal Team has both agreed to erase the cancellation and re-activate the item from the eBay Data Base. We have confirmed that ( john@doe.com) is the rightful owner of the eBay account, which was accessed by an unauthorized person. So we gladly urge you to complete the transaction with him/her so as to receive your funds into your PayPal account.

We have been informed by PayPal Authority that the money will not be transfer into your PayPal account until they confirm the shipment details of the item. You are request to proceed with the shipment of the item within the next 24 - 48 Hours and get back to PayPal with the shipment tracking number for shipment verification so as to receive the funds into your PayPal account. Please Do not in anyway send the reference/tracking number of the item to the BUYER for the safety of your money.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Regards,

eBay Trust & Safety

So the last paragraph is what is throwing me off big time. Maybe I'm just being a moron and lack reading comprehension.

Anyone care to shine some light on it for me?

hmm that sounds pretty shady. i can't say i've heard of this happening.

the first sentence in that last paragraph isn't proper grammar either. it should be "transfered" in the past tense. seems kind of strange being that is probably an automated email w/some variables filled in.

I would be very cautious due to all the grammar mistakes. Go directly to eBay.com and check your messages

I have the first message I quoted in my inbox.

Thing is I don't see the auction whatsoever(on my sold/active/not sold page). The grammar/writing is horrible.

The second email sounds very much like a scam. I can't imagine why they would be telling you not to notify the buyer of the tracking number.

if the second message isn't in your inbox, then it's obviously fake

Sounds like a new scam to me. Get a hacked account, get auction 'termed, and then send that email.

Scammer hacked an ebay account.
eBay sends you a message about hacked account
Scammer knows you are going to get message from ebay.
Scammer spoofs an email saying it is an error.

Note* Messages through ebay are always emailed to you also.

edit: you probably had 0 feedback. A lot of fake bidders always mess up those auctions. They target you because you are less likely to know about ze scamz

You need to buff up some feedback before selling. You'll get low bids or scammers that screw you over

Exactly.

Course of action:
1. Login to eBay
2. Verify your Email address on file and make sure it's not set to someone else's email addy
2. Change your password to something REALLY difficult to hack (with 7 characters including numbers)
3. Read messages through eBay and see what has been sent to you there...don't trust anything through your inbox. Especially if it includes links. (phishing scams)

Make your listings more professional too. It gives the impression that you know what you're doing on eBay.

Since the account owner did not initiate these bids, all fees resulting from the listings in question will be credited to your account within 7 days.

Wouldn't that mean they are going to refund me by saying the above?

I realize it's fake/spam. I've always heard about the spam BS on ebay, just never experienced it first hand:p

edit-Was just surprised it happened the very first time I tried to sell something.

It is at this point that you box up a nice bag of poo or something, ship it to that address with like a $2000 claimed value so the SOB has to pay import taxes on crap.

Stupid scammers!
