Or jsut always put the maximum youre willing to pay in the inital bid and save yourself the hassle.

Yeah and watch the guy outbid you by $0.50

Outbid you by $.50 more than you said you were willing to pay. If you were willing to pay $.50 more you should have set your max $.50 higher. Someone is always going to outbid you by the bid increment if you get outbid. How long will you say "Just another 50 cents!" before you give up? That is your maximum.

There are two kinds of eBay users;
Those who don't understand and those who snipe.

No. Sniping prevents a bidding war in most cases. The other guy will not have time to counter your bid. Regardless, if you are not willing to pay more than someone else, there is nothing you can do. The point is to take advantage of the other guy low-balling his bid by not giving him a chance to counter-bid.

You state the obvious - sniping is only effective against other snipers and people who don't understand or trust the proxy bidding system.

Ebay isn't a "game." You don't really "win" auctions. You name your maximum price and you either get the item for less than or equal to that price or someone else overpays.

Rational thinking FTW!!!!!

Just use Justsnipe.com and enter your maximum acceptable price then walk away...

sniping also "protects" against shill bidding and hids your interest from other bidder on an item until the last minute. Bidding your max at the beginning is ok but leaves you open to nibblers. There is very little downside to sniping (except on the rare and stupid chance that a seller ends early to sell to current bidder) except you have to wait around or use a sniping program. Bid once, bid your maximum amount that you are willing to pay (including s/h) and bid at late as possible. If you get outbid, just say to yourself someone was willing to pay more than you were.

The fact remains that if you snipe, you'll get stuff cheaper whereas proxy bidding ends up driving up the price and you end up paying more than you should have.
Maybe not people on this forum, but the average eBay user has no idea of the relative price of a product and just want to win the auction (I've sold used items well over retail on eBay). Once they see bids on a product, their aim is to outbid so that they win.

The concept of proxy bidding like you described is not practiced by the average ebay user.

because people use proxy bidding

normally, the experience users would throw in a last price during the last 30 seconds or so

provided u have a good internet connection

next time, just keep it in the view , or bid once just to help u watch the item better

I always bid the most i'll ever pay for an item. If someone wants to pay more, sniping or not, i dont care as i wasnt going to pay a penny more anyway. Ive won and lost auctions that way but ive never got caught up in the moment and overpaid for stuff to try and "beat" a sniper :p

That's why Ebay is not so useful anymore for buying. Too many idiots who don't understand the system.

FIXED!

Seriously.. thats why sniping works! If there aren't any bids on the item, people won't bid at all most of the time.

Sure they will - all the hojillion people who have duped themselves into believing that sniping magically gets them items cheaper.

The only thing sniping does for me is eliminate the temptation to go back and up my bid.

Here is how you win auction:

You wait for the last 30 sec and you place your maximum bid. So if the other bidder bid less than ur maximum bid, you win. If your max bid is not enough, that mean the item is out of your price range.

Well whatever. All I know is that I got a Logitech Dual Action wireless controller for $10 and a GBA w/ 5 games/adapter/battery packs for $90 when they were going for twice that amount via sniping. Had I set a proxy bid, I still may have one but ended up paying much more :).
