Ebay phone cable damaged phone

I bought a Galaxy S5 phone a few months ago when they came out. The phone came with a short Samsung charging cable. After a while, it just became too difficult to work with, so I looked on eBay for a longer cable. I bought a 6 foot, USB 3.0 cable for $6 out of China. I figure, its a cable. What difference does cheap make. Well, after about 2 weeks, when I grab my phone after charging it all night the cable refuses to come out of the phone. I notice the plastic on the cable (phone end) was melted and brown. The phone had shut off. I turned it on and it said it shut down due to overheating. Wow, great phone! Anyway, I took the phone to the repair shop, they had to replace the charging port $85. I contacted the phone cable company that I purchased it from and sent them a copy of pictures and the receipt. They said that they can only replace the cable with another. I responded, why would I want another $85 bill by using another one of your cables? Is there any liability with these companies that sell poorly made cables? The repair shop said that these cheap cables do not have the same specifications as OEM and the metal comes in contact and shorts out. Any thoughts?

The cable didn't cause your problem.

Unless Samsung has gotten even more aggressive with their closet Apple-ism...'Uh-oh, this aftermarket cable fails my internal consumer rape check. Time to light myself on fire!'

Link to cable?

Why go to ebay and order a cable from china when you can get an Amazonbasics 6 ft cable for $5.49 with free prime shipping? Still probably chinese made, but I would bet on amazon standing behind their products long before some random place on ebay.

I always looked at ebay as kind of a wild west "who knows whether you'll get something that works or not or any support afterwards" place to buy things. I only buy from them if I can't get what I want from any regular retailer, even if it costs me a few dollars more. It certainly wouldn't be my go to place for usb cables.

Or go to Monoprice and get a cheap cable for $0.84 or a premium cable for a whopping $3.05!

May not get much more support buying the cheap cable, but least you only spent $0.84.

It's standard for companies to limit their liability to the cost of their product. The phone company doesn't pay you damages for lost business if they misprint your phone number in the Yelllow Pages.*

Its called product liability. If a doctor, auto mechanic and even lawyer make a mistake (not just for the part), they can be sued. Sort of why so many electronics have UL (Underwriters Laboratory) symbols on them. Obviously you have never been involved with subrogation. Buy a cheap extension cord and have it cause a fire in your house? Guess what. Yep, if the source of the fire can be traced back to the cheap extension cord, they can be sued.

Good luck suing some random eBay company in China. Let me know how that works out for you...
