Why do you care anyways? If it comes out to the same price in the end, whatever. Why does it matter if an item costs 30$ with 5$ shipping as opposed to 10$ with 25$ shipping? In the end ebay is just getting less money.

DING DING DING WINNAR.

Shouldn't really matter to YOU at all. The only person that is losin' out is eBay. What you have to look at is the TOTAL cost to you.

Obviously someone is willing to pay the high shipping costs otherwise these people wouldn't be able to do it.

Also, higher shipping cost and lower price drives eyeballs to your auctions. The more people see it the more they're likely to bid as the price initially appears lower. Call this a flaw in ebay's initial search system.

Yeah, it's been that way for a long time. So many do it, my guess is many people don't figure in the shipping when bidding on an item.

I don't understand why eBay doesn't show the shipping costs in the searches. They show it in the Completed Items searches and they show it when you're watching an item. And it does matter to me. As a buyer, I don't want to have to click into every item to see that they are charging retail price as shipping. As a seller, I charge actual shipping and state it explicitly.

Another silly gimmick sellers use is the word "Free". Such as selling an Ipod and saying "Free Case". It's an auction! People take the "Free" items into account when bidding, so it's not free at all. Auctions can't have free goods.

This reminded me when I won the auction for a rc ufo like I seen on tv. I paid 1 penny for it at the end of the auction but the shipping was $15 😛

Uh, you can do that. Just set up your search colums to include shipping costs. I have it that way:

Yup. I just bought a leather cell phone case for my dad's phone. It cost 0.01 BiN + $5.99 shipping. I didn't bat an eye, I just bought it. I don't give a sh!t 😀

That how one makes money on ebay. A lot of buyers don't really factor in the shipping costs of an item when considering to buy it, on smaller items it's easy to double one's profit just by jacking the shipping. I fully intend to take advantage of each ebay buyer in every way that I can. 🙂

It is not legal to inflate shipping charges to pad your profit. Many people do this, but I've also reported them. If you say it costs $20 for shipping, it better cost you $20 for shipping, otherwise you just illegally scammed someone.

If you regularly do this, expect to be reported.

I'm talking about the people who will sell a $100 memory stick for $80, then charge you $40 to ship it UPS ground.

They can't do this, they are scamming the buyer, plain and simple.

I know this has been going on for a long time, I just make it a point to report people who break the law by doing this. They are breaking the law and trying to scam you. I don't tolerate scammers. They are a low form of life.

You can charge whatever you want for a product, but you are not allowed to hide the cost in shipping charges. You just can't legally do that.

**I guess you haven't bought items from many online retailers before?????...I've had retailers charge me $12 to ship a 2 pound box via UPS ground**

Back to eBay...

They aren't scamming YOU. They are scamming eBay by skipping out on eBay fees. If your dumbass is going to pay $120 for a MS that you can get for $100, then so be it.

If someone has a BIN on a MS for $100 with free shipping vs someone with a BIN of $70 with $30 shipping it doesn't really matter who you buy it from. When you make your PayPal payment or send a money order, they are both for the same amount. You aren't out anything...eBay is.

Bottom line, YOU aren't getting scammed. eBay is the one losing money.

I think we're talking about 2 different things.

I'm referring to people on ebay who advertise the price as being xxx, then when you win the auction and they email you the shipping costs they are jacked way up. This is a form of bait and switch.

Also online retailers do this. You go to order a processor for a good price from a website, and it says shipping is added at checkout. You complete your order and see that they charged you $30 to ship a CPU 90 miles with UPS ground. This is illegal, they are scamming you. They baited you with the good price, then the final price was artificially inflated.

1) Which is why I ask beforehand if the seller doesn't list shipping costs. If they respond with a fee that I see to be unreasonable, I don't bid

2) I would never buy from a vendor that did that...nor have I ever bought from a vendor that did not provide shipping costs at checkout.

I live near New York and this is common there. Check out almost any camera place in Brooklyn, they are just nasty. You can get great deals from them if you are harsh enough, but if you go into the transaction like a sheep they'll shaft you.

I got my camcorder for a great price from a place in Brooklyn. Of course they tried to fool me and get me to buy accessory kits, but I know how to play their game and I smacked them down and got them to sell it to me for the advertized price.

I just scanned through this thread, and didn't read everyone's post, but I don't know why there's so much bitching going on, I don't like high shipping costs. I just avoid it by adding the shipping column that NFS4 talked about. I can't understand why you guys can't just ignore those people who have ultra high shipping, if you don't buy from them, they can't rip you off and maybe they'll eventually lower their prices.

That's nothing. I saw $30 to $40 for shipping (for mobile phones)! :Q

They're usually shipped internationally via Express most of the times.
The minimum is like $30ish to ship express international.

Geezzz....so many people missed the point.
People that charges outrageous shipping fees are paying less Ebay fees....thats pretty damm smart.
Why does it matter if an item cost $20 with $80 shipping fee as oppose to $90 with $10 shipping fee ?? The smart seller is only paying Ebay fee on $20 instead of $90.

Now if Ebay were smart, their fees would be based on the TOTAL final price not just the final selling price.

Shipping and Handling 🙂

There is no way that it's illegal to set your own handling price. If it is I would like to know and I will stop.

To be fair to me, I list the shipping and handling charges in the auction. Any smart person should check all the costs of the auction, if they do not, it's no fault of mine. I would not do the bait and switch trick as that is scamming.
