I recently sold a guy 128MB of pc100 ram (Micron chips). After he gets it he tells me it doesn't work and is going to send it back for a refund. OK I thought no problem. I get the package back and the RAM he sent me is Kingston value ram that doesn't work.

Is this guy just trying to get a free stick of ram?

What should I do

Politely ask him why he sent the wrong RAM back to you. Say, I am willing to refund your $$ if the RAM I sold you doesn't work, but can't refund money on RAM that you did not sell him.

Do not refund the man. Do not even ship him his ram back unless he pays you return shipping + a couple bucks for your time.

Actually, if it were me, and you have every legal right to do this, just throw the kingston crap out and tell him to go to hell.

It doesn't work, hes a prick, he is trying to troll you, and in this country we have a law that if you are sent something you never asked for then you may keep it and use it as you see fit. You didn't ask for a stick of kingston valueram, and thus it is yours to keep and do with as you see fit.

Shaftatplanetquake: Let me guess, you are about 16 years old right? You can't run a business like that. People do make mistakes. If he wants to do what you said, he better be prepared to take a huge hit on his eBay record. Most people would rather try to work out the problem, instead of have it escalate to a bigger problem. Taking the tone you did, will lead to that.

Also: It is possible that the buyer could do a chargeback on his credit card for not receiving the item as described (I'm not saying this is what happend, but it is his option). Then, it is possible that the seller will be stuck with NO RAM and NO money....

I agree with the idea to send a curtious email and ask if he made a mistake. I have had similar situations happen a couple of times and it turned out that they had gotten mixed up in their haste to send it back.

But I will also say that one guy did try to do a switch and the only reason I noticed was because I'm slightly anal rententive so I always jot down the serial number. He tried to get eBay to refund his money but I don't think he remembered to finish the process. But the item, a hard drive, turned out to still be in warranty so I was able to get it RMAed and so I basically got another hd for free.
