That's a good policy, because it stops people from starting numerous fake profiles to sell the item...

The policy is not for the consumer but for ebays image and also their bank account. Did you notice people MUST use paypal. If I did that I would get a CC payment and have to "upgrade" my account and give even more to ebay/paypal.

First..I don't think ebay should allow pre-order sales anyway...if the person doesn't have the product in hand to sell...they have no legal right to be taking money...

And..If you are a serious ebayer with a paypal account, you are aware that if you use your paypal card you get a lot of your fees back...you can export money from your bank account into your paypal account...and in general get all your fees back.

But I thought they were just a venue?

What business is it of theirs what I sell, how I sell, as long as I am not breaking any laws?

So thats just for presales? Once they are out and someone is selling the actual unit, its business as usual, right?

I say let the people that buy the systems and resell them do as they please.
What's the saying. A fool and his money are easily parted.

Good to see eBay doing something about this. The only thing I would change is the "must accept PayPal" option.

Here is the text for anyone who can't visit the site

There's this type of person who buys a new console not to play it, but to re-sell it. This 'type' of person compounds supply issues by buying up stock at retail price not strictly to make a fast buck. Meanwhile the eager game system fanboy looses out because he has to pay 3,4,5 times the retail price to get that system now because 1/2 the supply is up on eBay for sale to the highest bidder.

We saw this with the Xbox360 and it's only going to be worse with the Playstation 3. Remember all those scams on eBay last year? A few people were selling just their Xbox360 box so they had a photo of just the box and people were bidding 600, 700 bucks for it. Some clown had a brown cardboard box and with marker drew an X on it and put it up online as an X box and it drew a stupid amount of money in bidding frenzy.

Well... eBay feels your pain and has put rules in place well in advance to stop some of the insanity. Effective immediately eBay has set in place the following rules for Playstation 3 and Wii auctions:

* Only one of each console can be listed per seller at a time prior to the system launch dates.
* The seller must only accept PayPal payments and have a minimum of 50 feedback and a rating of 98% or higher to qualify for PayPal Buyer Protection.
* The pre-sale can only be in Auction format, no Buy It Now listings will be accepted
* The listing must include a clear photo of the pre-order receipt in the description of your auction

That all sounds like a pretty good step forward. Except I'm a bit suspicious on the PayPal thing. eBay stands to make a lot of money double dipping fees because they make money on the auction closing amount as well as they make 3% basically on the PayPal transaction. It does however help prevent wire and check fraud.

Not what theyre saying.

You must show an image of a presale receipt to list it BEFORE it comes out, not after.

And you can still list it with under 50 feedback, but your buyer will not be eligible for buyer protection, and that as a result reconsider his bid.

And being that just about every store will only let you pre-order one, you can only pre-list one.

The restrictions are reasonable - theyre clearly primarily there to prevent fraud.

Don't the buyer only get buyer protection if they pay through paypal? As a buyer, I see this is a good thing. As for the sellers, you are getting 100% and up in profit, what is 3% fees. :D

is the restriction only for pre-launch auctions?

Or for all ps3/wii auctions including ones after the launch.

Agreed, the buyer is financially protected ONLY through PayPal. Any other method of payment and the person is screwed.

I see it as a GREAT policy for pre-orders. After the 17/19, it will be business as usual.

Don't like their rules? Sell somewhere else.

I really really hope Google gets into the auction racket after all they are into everything else.

When google starts it's own auctions ebay will suffer the same fate as Sony and Ford. :D
