eBay buyer wants his money back

I sold this item last week HERE
Product condition is as states: Excellent: extremely slight wear and tear

Buyer wants his money back because he feels he paid more than he should have for the condition the phone was in (believes that phone had more than "slight wear and tear").

I say he assumed the risk of a subjective rating of the product condition by purchasing a used product. In my opinion, yes, the phone was in excellent condition when I shipped it out. Whose to say he did not tamper with the product upon receipt? Also, buyer used the "Buy It Now" function. If he felt he paid too much, should he not have simply set a maximum bid for what he felt was fair to pay for a used phone? Furthermore, if he truly wanted to see the condition of the phone before purchasing, should he not have requested for a close-up picture of the phone?

I honestly don't believe I should refund him the money. Who knows what he did to the phone upon receipt of package. Perhaps I may become the victim if he sends me back a broken phone.

What to do?

do you have any larger/closeup pictures of the "slightwear"? If his only argument was he paid to much then I'd tell him tough luck. But if it's significantly more worn than your pictures indicate...

I wouldn't give him a refund and if he gives you a negative I would do the same and note
that he was shipped exactly what was listed and that he is being too picky.

But again like the last guy said......if you want a spotless record on Ebay you'll have to bite
your tongue from time to time when you run across someone who is being unreasonable.

you have no obligation to refund, however, it would put you higher than him. just deduct the cost of the auction, shipping and the price for a new auction. that is, if you choose to go that route.

I wouldn't refund him his money - couldn't he have asked for more detailed pics or at least a better description of the "wear and tear" before buying? It sounds to me like he just changed his mind after shelling out that much money.

I wouldn't.

I think it's his responsibility to have requested a higher quality pic, especially before jumping on something with Buy It Now...

My 2¢ anyways~

Encourage the buyer to resell the phone. If anything offer a slight refund due to "wear and tear" instead of a total return and full refund.

This sounds like a clear case of buyer's remorse.
He used BIN and then found he could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere.

IF you are feeling incredibly generous and decide to offer a refund, deduct the shipping cost, your fees and a 15% restocking fee. At this point, I would guess that the buyer is gonna neg you whether you refund or not.

🙂

edit: Ironic that the buyers feedback reflects a neg for what he is accusing the OP of.

I hate situations like this. I assume that you are being truthful when you said the phone was in nice condition. If it's fully functional, then I would not refund the money. If you're fudging your description, then shame on you 😀

Why don't you offer a $30 refund and see what buyer says? I wouldn't worry about a negative feedback. If buyer gives you a negative, just counter with a no nonsense response.

that buyer is probably not worth it. big deal you get one negative rating. i'm pretty sure you have plenty of positive ratings already

No. But if you really want to keep that perfect rating for as long as possible, then go ahead. I personally wait until both sides are completely done before leaving feedback to avoid any kind of "hostage" feedback situations.

It doesn't really avoid the situation so much as give you a hostage too 😛

I guess it depends on the condition of the product.
You did say extremely slight wear and tear so to me it should be almost new with a few unnoticeable scratches.
I know it's subjective but when you state in such a matter I believe people expect better.

Of course, you don't have to refund his money.
He'll probably left you a negative feedback, you can probably do the same.
If I were you, I'd consider how much I've made, say $50, and give him a discount, say $25.
It's all up to you at the end.

you have done nothing wrong.
You should've included more detailed pictures, but the buyer made a judgment call and ended up disappointed. Oh well.... his loss.

If you want good feedback, maybe you should give him his money back minus the re-listing fees.

agreed.. as long as it really wasn't large amounts of wear and tear, you're clear.
the guy probably just doesn't like the product and wants his money back.. too bad I'd say.

do as someone suggested. have him ship it back to you, AT HIS COST. if he wants a refund, he won't receive shipping back, minus listing fees, and whatever cost you want to slap on him.

then relist.

if he agrees to it, you guys agree not to leave each other negs.

It's a phone, it works, who the hell cares what it looks like. I can't imagine anyone would be impressed by a fancy looking cell phone.

You really ought to have included close-up pictures of the slight wear and tear and let the bidders judge for themselves. If you can get the guy to cover all of your costs, it would be in your best interest to refund him the difference. Otherwise, one negative feedback with a response from you explaining the situation wouldn't stop me from bidding from you.
