I'll just jump straight to cliffs:
1. I posted a broken PS3 on ebay - used the words BROKEN in my title and said BROKEN, AS IS, and a description of the problem throughout the post

2. Buyer pays quickly - kudos, but her shipping address is a P.O. Box so I email her just to double check that that's the correct shipping address

3. She verifies the address and I reply back with a kind "hey, the item is BROKEN, I know it said that in the description but I just want to make sure you're ok with that." I meant it - I would refund the money, it's easier to deal with before shipping something out

4. She said she didn't realize it would be broken and would like a refund money order mailed out to her immediately and not a paypal refund

That's the point that's annoying and weird to me - I would lose ebay fees plus pay for a money order and shipping.. Seems almost nigerian!

I don't mind giving her her money back but this has scam written over it.. What would you do?

I wouold just issue her a paypal refund but worry about her leaving negative feedback

Tell her its your policy to refund in the same way you received the money. Its paypal or nothing at all.

I agree. I'm not sure how the scam would work, but that sounds *highly* unusual.

Get refund by money order...then tell PayPal you need a refund through PayPal. Double up.

yep... if you send a money order or whatever she can claim she never got the money back and you're out the amount plus all fees

Paypal refund or the item, those are the 2 choices.

You could use a digital camera to record a video (making sure to show the address and the money order, having the camera going while you place it in the envelope, lick, and put in the big blue USPS thing.

Then post that to youtube.

QFT, this is a scam. Report to ebay and paypal as well even if it works out.

why would you even consider sending a MO? Why? for what reason? she sent you paypal, you refund her with paypal. If i bought a Car with a CC and did not like it, would the dealership send me a $25k MO? I dont think so!

Mail the MO to me. I'll make sure she receives the money in short order.

DANGER Will Robinson!!!

- You know this is a scam.

- You know that you are going to lose your money.

- They paid with ill gotten funds and you are going to pay them with YOUR funds.

- When this is discovered YOU will be required to pay the funds back to the hijacked person's account.

This is an interesting twist on the 419 scam.

This...as long as the original selling description was explicit in telling a potential purchaser that the item was BROKEN and was sold AS-IS...and they bid on it anyway...let them eat the fucking thing.
NO REFUND.

it's a scam. the creditcard that the buyer(if it really is a woman) used is probably stolen or the CC info was found on the scammer forums. if you refund the paypal then the money goes back to the real CC owner and never gets to the scammer, hence the money order.

wanna bet the fact that the item was broken was not in big bold letters.
In faxct I would bet you that it was in very small letters and probably a 2 word sentence such as - item broken.
