eBay Bundle - is it worth it?

Hi,

I'm looking to make a simple build for my dad and found this

Core i5 2400

Asus P8H61 motherboard

Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) PC10600 DDR3 RAM

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB Hard Drive

bundle does come out about £70 cheaper than if bought separately, but would it be worth getting the bundle with the ram and buying better ram?

not going to overclock it, sure is overkill for what he is going to do but want a reliable system for him and he does usually have multiple windows/applications open.

Or shall i just go for a used core 2 duo cpu mobo and ram which i can do for about £100?

Looks like a really good price, I can't see any reason why you would need to upgrade the RAM that stuff will run just fine. If you can stomach the price you will get a lot longer useable lifespan out of this build than a £100 core 2 duo build


Edit. The 1tb drive is probably overkill if he just wants a pc for messing around on but i just priced up the other components on scan and they come to £234 without a HDD so i can really reccomend getting a smaller one

It's not always about the size of the HDD. Newer HDDs typically have higher density platters, which gives us not only larger capacities, but faster overall performance. Looks like a fine set of parts to me. The Crucial RAM is perfectly good, so you wouldn't need to replace that.

since it comes to 234 without a HD from scan, i may aswell get the ebay bundle as its as if i get a HD for free.

last question before i order, will a Power supply from a P4 system work with this or should i buy another one? seeing as its a low powered system I am thinking it will be ok.

^ A PSU from that era may not have the correct power connectors for a modern build (8pin for CPU/mobo, plus PCIe and SATA power connectors). Also, it may not have sufficient power on the 12V line (the main draw on modern systems). So check your current PSU carefully for its 12V-rating & power connectors before assuming it will work.

Meh...Price per gb... have you priced out smaller drives? price per gb seems to go up as you go smaller in hd size and cheaper as you go up. Probably will never get filled up but better value than a smaller drive unless we're talking SSD.
 
will go for that psu then, i cant see anywhere where it says it has the 2 x 12v cpu supply (i mean the 2 x 4pin for the cpu incase either is confusing..) does anyone know if it has it?

If you actually read the OP airdata you would see that he isnt pricing up components and it is a bundle deal and if you are going to quote me please quote full sentences. At no point did I advocate he buys smaller drive I just pointed out 1tb is overkill for what the machine will be used for BUT as it was such a good price he should go for it. Deliberately misqouting me so you can waffle on about larger hdd's costing less per gb is irrelevant to this thread and rude to boot. If you would like to learn how to quote someone and make a relevant point see blackmages post.

The "4+4pin ATX12v connector" is the connector that betasub was referring to.
