While reading a page that scrolls vertically, I habitually click the middle wheel to activate variable speed scrolling. It scrolls smoothly instead of jumping, so I don't lose my place while reading.

I've tried the Logitech Smooth Scrolling plugin for Chrome and it has all kinds of undesirable side effects, so I don't use it.

Well, eBay auction pages don't let me activate variable speed scrolling with the mouse wheel. This has been a problem for years and it's the only site I ever encounter that does this.

Does anyone else have the same problem with eBay? Have you found a work-around?

Seems to work fine for me, I use that all the time too. Using Firefox in Linux Mint.

I did notice that some sites break that functionality though.

Your arrow key in Chrome scrolls smoothly without jumping and you don't use some kind of smooth scrolling extension?

if I hit down key I go down 20 pixels at a time or whatever, if I hit the middle wheel button and then pull down then it does what I believe you're referring to as smooth scrolling.

Yes. 20 pixels at a time would be a jump and my poor, weak eyes will lose track of the line I was reading.

Anyway, I think it's more like 3 lines or 60 pixels.

Looking at things very carefully, yes scroll wheel down or arrow key down does seem to jump 3 lines.
