Never had a problem on ebay - I just setup my auctions to restrict who can bid on my items depending up on the price. If it's a low cost item [say $25] - then I'll accept any bids as it's not going to be a huge loss if something happens.
I will take pictures of the item [and unique serial #'s]. a picture of the item packed in the box, and the box with the shipping label as additional proof in case someone does try to pull a scam.
Only thing I don't like about ebay is you're double billed for fees - for the auction selling price and for paypal transaction.

Signature confirmation seems useless to me, or maybe I just don't understand the security behind it.
Seems like anyone can just sign for a package, and UPS/USPS/FedEx will just upload an image of the scribbled mess and say "oh well, someone signed for it so we delivered it".
What does that really accomplish?

...also, I find that UPS / FedEx drops off "Signature Required" packages without even knocking and drives away.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure the driver also scribbles something to make it look like someone signed for the package.

This happens to me all the time. The tracking will say signed by <my name>, but I never actually signed for it.
Nothing, really.
However Paypal buries that little line pretty deeply on their help page and the more I google the more horror stories I find from people who didn't opt for signature confirmation and got automatically screwed.
The only reason I'm even ok with this is because the buyer is a ~90 minute drive from me.

The "paypal chargeback" fraud is yet another reason that I've abandoned E-bay. It's not bad enough that buyers routinely fuck sellers by claiming that they didn't get the item, or that it arrived broken...but E-bay REQUIRES sellers to accept Paypal...they're requiring you to set yourself up to get fucked...

another reason why to withdraw your funds from paypal ASAP. there's no reason to carry a balance whatsoever in your paypal acct. From what i remember, even during a dispute, I don't think paypal has the ability to withdraw from your bank account without your authorization. as long as you don't have funds in your paypal account, you will be somewhat insulated.
Really? I have to wait about 10 more days until the money is 'available' so I guess I'll just have to hope they're going to wait that long if they're going to eff me.
edit: Yep, confirmed. Paypal lost a huge lawsuit about this. Too bad I have to wait so long. Ah well screw it I am going to ship anyways and see what happens. What will insurance do for me?

Film everything going into the box and you affixing the label to it. Use a black sharpie and put a line going from the label to the cardboard part of the box and seal it under tape (while still filming). Insure the contents and use a trackable and signature shipping service. I might even go so far as certified mail with something that expensive.

Never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, ship to a zero feedback seller until the funds clear. This is standard practice for sellers on eBay and you should not feel bad at all for not shipping until the money clears.

I always withdrew funds from my Paypal account as soon as I got them. When I had the dispute and lost, Paypal just debited the bank account I had linked. No authorization, no warning. They just did it
Same.. never had anything go this wrong myself, but feel bad for those that have had to deal with it. Worst I ever got was a negative from someone that I provided a full refund for. 12.00 item.. sheesh.. ebay/paypal is a joke sometimes.

I've had a similar horror story as the ones above. But instead of the buyer saying he didn't receive it, he said it was broken and a repair was attempted by me to try and cover it up. Paypal told him to mail it back to me even though it was impossible for me to repair it how he say due to the material. Paypal refunded his money before he even sent it back. For whatever reason or something happened he gave them a tracking number to a town that was like an hour and a half away from me. I spoke to a person and told them to check the tracking and they said they didn't have that address on file for me and gave me the money back.
I got lucky, very lucky, otherwise I was out the money and the item. From that point on, I don't sell on ebay. The whole system is setup to fuck the seller over.

With any kind of rep system it's best to start off small and work your way up.
When I first opened my Ebay account to sell off a crapload of computer/electronics stuff, I started by selling the cheaper stuff first to build up my rating, and then when it got past 10 or so sales (all good reviews) I moved up to the more expensive things. Never had any problems.
Doesn't Paypal have a new "gift" form of payment? I believe the person who sends money as a "gift" is unable to dispute the payment. Not 100% sure on that as I haven't used Paypal or Ebay in forever

how long ago was this? this is what happened to me in 2008. somebody disputed a $600 item i sold but even though my paypal account was "negative", and kept prompting me to authorize paypal to transfer funds from my bank every time i logged in, it never tried withdrawing from my bank account on its own. maybe in later stages of the dispute it will do that?
as for the OP. i was lucky to have an honest foriegn zero feedback ebay bidder. I sold a $1500 laptop and had to ship it to australia. his paypal acct and address was verified and was quick with communication so it relieved me a little bit. needless to say, i paid $300 to ship it there UPS with signature confirmation and insurance, just to cover my ass. I still ended up making about $400 from the deal because lenovo laptops are overpriced over there and the bidder was willing to pay the extra USD for it.
