How are they going to link a seller to someone on their preorder list?

What do they care if someone is selling it? They got their money for the console.

This is going no piss off a lot of people.

to sell your pre-order receipt on ebay is genius, because you are not garanteed to get a PS3.

you didn't read the link at all, did you?
eBay's new policy regarding pre-order sales has made this possible by requiring that all pre-order listings include a photo of the receipt.

1. That says EB Games stores in Canada.

2. That's someone on a message board with nothing solid to back it up.

We'll see what happens.

Which is probably next to nothing (they make $12.50 on a Wii, not sure about the PS3). They want to sell the consoles to someone who will buy games. Totally understandable.

But the people who get a console from ebay still buy games somewhere.

Not as much as someone who pays MSRP for it. Shelling out only $600 instead of $2500 gives you ample cash left to buy games.

I hope so, but I dont see how they can really do this. I guess if you left your reservation number on the receipt maybe.

Sure, but when someone buys a console they usually buy a few games at the same time (and at the same store). If you resell it the guy who buys it might buy his games at Best Buy or Circuit City if those stores are close to him.

And from the perspective of the store managers, the manager of GameStop in Kalamazoo doesn't want your buyer to get his games at the GameStop in Albuquerque, because the sales numbers for their individual stores matter to them.

But they're not guaranteed to get the sales of those games.

It is far easier to get customers to purchase things when they're already in the store. Which all these other customers would've been when they came to pick up their machines.

They are probably marked with sales transactions numbers, the last 4 digits of your CC, the time and date which can probably match up with records, etc.

Even just having a store number can probably narrow it down to less than 10 people for most stores.

Yeah. It's like the gas station analogy. Store owners make a very small profit on gas so they have stuff inside to make up for that. EBGames is the same way. The make very little on the console itself and sell the accessories in hopes of turning a profit.

Oh and I don't think there's anything "illegal" to this plan. Pre-order is just that, a registration for a system that you "might" get on release. It's not a full promise that you'll get one on launch, just that you'll get one sometime.

Hmm... good point. EB is concerned about losing the game and accessory sales.

And then what will ebay do? Suspend everyone that this happens to even though its not their fault?

Probably not, the users will just have to refund the money.

Does EB Games state when you're buying the item that it's not for resale (like Dell does)?

I still contend that these people are all idiots anyway. Why ebay a preorder ticket? The PS3 hype has barely begun. Wait till after the the system is launched. Then put it up on ebay after Thanksgiving and you will make a bigger profit. Once all the parents are scrambling to find systems the real bidding wars will begin.

with the ps3, I wouldnt sell a preorder...you will ake more once it is released and you actually have one in your possession...

for me, I sold my Wii preorder because I knew there would be plenty available on release day, so I wanted to make a profit while I could.

in hindsight, I wont be selling anything I dont have in my possession from now on.
