Eating noises in commercials

Should be banned. It turns my stomach over everytime I hear someone crunch, gulp, or chew on commercials. I'm highly likely to avoid a company's product when their commercials loudly make eating noises, especially ones where the commercial has twice the volume of the TV show you're watching.

Most recent offender: Vlasic. That stupid pickle commercial pisses me off.

Studies have been done as to the effect of the sound of another eating. They have conclusively shown that when we hear and see food being eaten we subconsciously crave that food. You see, I was once a researcher and I have made recommendations to the top advertising firms in the world on this matter.

I'm certain that your TV or DVR has this wonderful button called "Mute." It's really quite handy. 😉

I hate eating sounds too on TV or the radio. Usually switch channels.

The sound of the food itself, such as the packaging, is different, and will draw attention, but the actual nom nom nom sound can be done without.

My friend and I went to a food festival where they had a booth for Lay's potato chips. You stepped into a small glass closet and there were little bags of chips. You were supposed to open a bag and crunch down on some chips. There was a microphone with a meter that everyone could see. The idea was to gauge how loud the chips were when you chewed them.

So I went in, opened my bag, popped some in my mouth and made a loud crr-unch sound as I ate them. The meter red lined and the crowd oohed and ahhed. I stepped out of the booth and they gave me a gigantic bag of chips as my prize. I told my friend what I did and when he repeated the stunt, the guys running the booth got suspicious. We left, but later we walked by the booth and they had shut down the isolation booth and were just giving away small bags of chips.

I hate it when they have sirens or car accident sounds in radio commercials.

This. IMO sirens should be illegal, it can actually cause confusion and distract people thinking there's a real emergency and makes you look around for nothing. Then again, I've never heard of an accident caused by a siren commercial.

I just recently experienced an example of the effects of a siren on the radio. I was driving during rush hour and a siren came on during the middle of a song. I saw several cars slow down and traffic was actually affected a little bit.
