Eating eggs past expiration?

Is it safe to eat eggs that are past the expiary date? I really can't see the issue with only a few days, I'm sure they don't have a special timer where they suddenly degrade at midnight. 😛 I'm thinking of hard boiling them or making scrambled eggs, not sure yet.

Are the dates more or less "safe values"? I have eggs that expired on the 12th and I kept telling myself I have tons of time. Next thing you know we're the 14th. Time goes by too fast.

Conveniently I was given a free dozen today at the grocery store. They had a promotion going on where you got a free one if you buy more then 100 worth of groceries.

In my experience, hard boiled eggs turn out much better well after the expiration date.

I've got eggs in my fridge that expired, uh, end of August. That might be pushing it though 😉 I actually still eat them, but I'm also an idiot.

edit: And when I say eat them, I actually mean put them raw in my protein shakes. Salmonella ain't got nothin on me!

They grade eggs based on freshness, essentially, meaning that the white of a fresh egg will stand up in a frying pan whereas a not-so-fresh egg's white will kinda run outward, flatly away from the yolk. They do this by "candle-ing" eggs to see if the yolk will move about in the the white inside the egg or if the white holds the yolk firmly in place.

That doesn't mean that grade B eggs are "bad" as in "rotten," just not as fresh.

I buy my eggs 5-dozen at a time, and I'm more-or-less the only one that eats them. I prepare them almost exclusively 5 at a time, whites only, for my breakfast meal. I know that I keep them well past the expiration date, but since I cook them thoroughly I don't really worry about it.
