Eating before weightlifting?

Every so often after I go lifting I feel really sick to my stomach. I'm not talking about being sore, I mean feeling like I'll throw up, dizziness, etc. My friend said it means I over-exerted myself. I think it might be that, but also that I don't eat enough before going. How much should I eat, and more importantly what should I be eating? What is quality "working-out food"? And how much time should I leave myself before I am done eating to when I start lifting? Thanks!

Eat high Carbs before and give yourself at least 30 minutes. Nothing heavy. Like an energy bar, etc. After you workout go heavier on Protein.

It's not really suggested you eat right before lifting, but instead try drying some milk or like Tauren suggested, eat a Power Bar. Drink some water as well WHILE you are working out, and eat AFTER you're done. You're body needs the food most afterwards, so get a big meal in there within an hour of your workout.

Eat your meal about 1-2 hrs before you lift. Then drink a whole bunch of water about an hour after that, give yourself time to digest - then go lift. Always bring a bottle of water with you aswell. As for what you should eat, anything but real heavy or greasy foods (no fried shrimp 🙂 ) Any other questions?

I eat at least a couple hours before if I can. I drink water while doing it. Whenever I get sick to my stomach its because I exerted myself a lot. I wouldn't say over-exerted, but definitely exerted!

I have to drink all of my water an hour before I go. If I don't when I do my ab exercises I feel like I am squeezing all of the water back up.

For maximum fat loss, workout on a empty stomach
For maximum performance, precede your workout with simple carbs/fructose (fruit sugars)

When I have something in my stomach before I lift, I tend to feel tired while lifting -- causing me to lift less. I tend to like eating 2+ hours before I go, then I have lots of energy to lift for longer.

I found something similar (extreme light-headedness) happening to me a lot during the summer. I read somewhere in Men's Health magazine to drink gatorade (say 500 mL) about an hour before working out and then the remaining 500 mL throughout your workout. I'm not sure if it was the placebo effect but I stopped getting the light-headed feeling I was getting.
