i would probably be ok with it if i brought either a laptop or a newspaper, then you look all serious business like and no one will judge you.

The only time I've ever eaten alone for dinner was whenever I'd be on business trips.

I do sometimes get lunch on my own though just to get away from work.

I've done it on business trips, a lot of the time during the year I was in the dorms in college, and other occasions... doesn't bother me.

I do that sometimes at fast food places but I don't think I can do that at nicer place - I get too self-conscious.

If I really want to eat out alone and don't want to feel embarrassed, I just bring a book or newspaper and pretend I'm reading it.

I enjoy it. I tend to bring a book with me.

This.

I've met some very nice waitresses doing this.

That's where I draw the line. I love food, with or without beer, but I can't convince myself to eat anything at a rester aunt alone. By alone, I also mean I can't even go to a sports bar and eat unless a friend is with me. It just isn't going to happen. I come from a string of fattys and food abusers. For those that know my family I always got hit with the "you'll be fat ass just like your parents if you get hooked..." bull shit. This kind of defines that line for me. Granted, I still like to eat and get full with friends, but its always safe and always social.

Holy deja vu.

I actually do it frequently, and I don't travel with my job. That's actually how I met new people to hang out with when I moved to Austin recently. It's only awkward if you make it awkward.

I usually eat at the bar if I'm by myself. I'll order a drink and food, and I'll chitchat with the bartender/waitstaff. If you order food, then you are golden. If you go to a restaurant bar by yourself and you only order a drink, I could see how that would be awkward.

Hell, if anyone gives you any smack, you can make up some story like, "I had a long day at the office." Usually after that, everyone else are cool.

I will eat at a fast food place alone easily. At a regular restaurant, it depends. I tend to get takeout more often because its cheaper and I get to sit at home and watch my nice television with a frosty brew or soda. Plus, I don't have to pay a huge tip. There are times I have eaten at a restaurant alone, but thats usually where I can sit at a bar and talk with other people and watch TV. Its rare though.
