This last Friday I formatted by data partion and my most recent backup was a month old (yes, I had a NTFS partition that wasn't recognized by the Win98 bootdisk). Please don't misunderstand, the free copy of Lost and Found is a great deal. But all the DOS based programs I've tried in the past few days are incredibly slow and inflexible. EasyRecovery runs in Windows (I used it in XP and 98 both), is good at recovering and is FAST - it was vastly superior to everything else I tried. The WHOLE process took 20 minutes in XP and about 100 minutes in 98 on my system (sorting through the files took a little longer, some of the hierarchy structure is lost in the recovery process) . I recovered all my files and some that I didn't know were there (over 5000). Maybe two were corrupted.

I'm sure everyone knows about and has ignored McAfee.com's subscription based online services. But they have EasyRecovery available as a subscription based online service (it's actually a download that runs locally - probably has a trigger to turn itself off in a year). One year is $50. The best part is that they offer a 30 money back guarantee. It was right on the receipt that they give to print out. When you consider that the FULL personal edition runs $90 to $180, $50 or even free has to be hot [though someone is going to HAVE to disagree, I'm sure :)].
