Easynews has doubled the love to 20 gigs for $9.98 plus gave everyone an extra 20 gigs to compensate for a server outage on July 18.

The relevant thread on their support forum: Text

I originally posted in Off-Topic but figured this may be a hot deal for some.

20gb is a good deal, before it was just too few. I may switch.

I started on EasyNews when it was only 6gb a month, but my usage grew to big so I moved elsewhere for an unlimited account.

Dang. I was hoping it had doubled to 40GB/month (+ the bonus 20gb). I've already used up all 40gb's that they gave us (20gb/month + 20gb/bonus for server problems) this month catching up on S1 of BSG and downloading errrrrrr, other stuff.

I use a combination of unlimited Newshosting + Easynews and it be DA SH1T.

Just curious -- why would this be better than Giganews unlimited at $24.95/mth? The web access is the only advantage I can see. Giganews gives far better retention, and better completion.

I rarely ever have completion issues with Easynews. It also has a nice search engine and some great zipping tools without having to download a crapload of headers in a news client which slows things down. Also with my unlimited account at Newshosting I can download a crapload ridiculous amount of goodies via newsbin pro and then use my quota limited Easynews account to complete missing parts by simply searching for their filenames instead of begging people like an idiot to repost missing/corrupted parts. Great thing about EN search is that it generates 'storyboard' thumbnails for vids and pics.

From what I remember, Giganews didn't have these must have features so..EZ+NH for me.

I agree completely. I have both Giganews and Easynews and have extensively compared their retention and completion. Giganews is much better in every way. You get what you pay for.

Usenet? What's so great about that? (no sarcasm here, never used it...)

I don't know, Easynews' web interface and global search is pretty cool. I don't think Giganews has something comparable

Well, I've been a LONG time member, and some years ago, I created a handy program to search selected groups using their web interface.

I use two web-based usenet servers right now, EasyNews and News2Me (Pretty much unlimited, but more limited on binaries). News2Me has a great global search, so a fgriend modified my EasyNews program and turned it into an IE plugin to grab all links on a page. Worked great with N2M, then I modified it again when EasyNews came up with their global search page.

The long and short of this.... unlike pure usenet servers, I can, literally, start downloading GIGABYTES worth of files in minutes. With NNTP, you have to wait for headers, be selective about the newsgroups you use, and constantly worry about incompletes.

EasyNews banks binaries for a month or more, has an incredible global search, and a ZIP interface. @20GB per $10, it is the best deal on the web.

...oh, and did I mention,, RIAA and the MPAA will **NOT** come knocking on your door for using these services, either - unlike file sharing p2p apps.

Because EasyNews and News2Me, as well as similar services operate "anonymously"

The very zealously protect their client lists. Ask them. Your privacy is completely protected by them.

P2P programs are, by their very nature, exposing their users by announcing their IPs to anybody who searches for a song or movie, which the users themselves host. Usenet, on the otherhand, and the web equivalent, means that you are basically leeching, and your IP is between you and the usenet/web-base usenet company - and EasyNews and News2Me (as well as similar services) usually do not track this information (at least, they only track how MUCH you download, not WHAT you download).

Well the original program uses a bit too much of EasyNews' server time to be released to a lot of people... however, LinkQ, the tool my friend wrote based on that code (and I enhanced) will be available as soon as he gets off his lazy ass and updates the installer.

I'll pester him again and post a link here if he can get the update to me in the next few days.

The gist of it is it installs a toolbar interface, when you have your search page loaded with files, you click on the LinkQ button. It presents a list of files that you select. When you select them, you queue them up, which generates a GetRight GRX file and submits them to that download manager (tested on GetRight 4.5 to 6.0). the directory you chose to put the GRX file is where the files are sent. At that point, you just tell GetRight to start downloading.

I tweaked it to put the PAR2 index files, NFO and JPG files on high priority, PAR and PAR2 volumes on "Do Not Download" Priority, and other files in whatever priority you set. It's a nice tool...

Mostly the fact that he's leeching--not providing. All of the big lawsuits and busts haven't involved what's been downloaded but what has been uploaded or made available to upload. If the industries do go after usenet, they will be going after the posters, who not only are providing material, they're leaving a record of what they've provided as well.

Although it does need to be said.... posting through EasyNews (Via the NNTP side of the service) is also anonymous, as it hides your IP from the NNTP message headers. While I myself am not a poster of music or movies, I've posted my own apps (Xbox-related that I've written and compiled using the XDK) using the service and there was no trace of my IP or ISP's IPs on the resulting headers.

Really? Easynews has 35-40 day retention, is Giganews better than that? Also, Easynews' web interface and Zip Manager are both excellent tools. They improve Zip Manager constantly, and the service just keeps getting better and better. For people who use 20gb or less per month (I would assume most would fall into this category), I'd think Easynews would be the way to go, at only $10.

edit: ok, i see Giganews has about 45 days, that's pretty good. However, one other point: unused gigs at easynews roll over to the next month. If you only use 10, the other 10 will add to your new month, and you'll have 30.

IMO, for giganews to be the best choice, you'd need to be downloading more than 50 GB per month. That's a lot!

And supposedly none at Easynews, either. Unless they are required to from, say, a court order or such--not exactly impossible. Sorry. I think being a provider through any medium is a great way to land yourself your very own RIAA (or MPAA, etc) lawsuit.

Newshosting.com is the balls, especially for $15/month unlimited but giganews is the best, but @ $25/month, waaaay too rich for me, especially with Newshosting is upping thier retention to 40 days soon.
