True or False

false (not entirely sure though)
>>

AFAIK, this is actually TRUE. The reason is that some PCI slots share their IRQs. If two fast devices, like a graphics card and an IDE controller, are placed in the same slots, they can cause significant performance degradation.

<<
46. For a typical parallel cable, how many pins does it have?
(a)9 (b)15 (c)25 (d)None of these
Is it 25?
>>

Yes, it's a 25-in Centronics parallel interface. :p

<<
54. There is a 15 pin port on the back of the computer what could it be?
I'm too lazy to look. Is it serial port guys?

serial
>>

Nope, it's either the joystick port or the VGA connector.

<<
56. What are the possible errors when you get a "CMOS ERROR PLEASE RUN SETUP"? (need 2 answers)

not sure
>>

This could be one of: (a) CMOS back-up battery is dead; (b) Physical problem with the CMOS chip itself (e.g. static damage).

<<
58. Provide a metaphor or a simile for Cache on a processor?

very fast short term memory???
>>

A cache is just like the stock of canned tomatos at the grocery store. They don't keep too many cans there because it's taking up overhead, but not so few that their customers keep complaining and they have to keep reordering canned tomatos.

<<
86. Windows 95 is primarily a ___ Bit Operating System.

16bit

I dunno... 32?
>>

That's a toughie...but I would say 32.

<<
87. Win 3.11 has the acronym of (WFW). What does this stand for?

Windows for Workgroups

Is it Workspace for Windows or something like that?

It is Windows For Workgroups.

<<
88. What is the IRQ of a typical printer port?
>>

It depends on the BIOS. I think it's either IRQ7 or IRQ5, depending if you have a sound card.

<<
89. What is the typical IRQ of COM2?
(a)IRQ3 (b)IRQ4 (c)IRQ2 (d)IRQ5
>>

USUALLY IRQ3.

<<
90. What is the typical COM port of a Bus Mouse?
(a)IRQ3 (b)COM 15 (c)IRQ 5 (d)None of these

my answers would be guesses or I checked my own settings... I am trying to do this from memory
I'm assuming b or d. Heh

I hate these "what is the typical port" questions. They have dip switches and BIOS settings for a reason. :p I think it's IRQ5 IIRC.

<<
92. The RISC Processor Chips are commonly seen in:
(a)Hard Drisk Drives (b)Pentium based computers (c)Printers

Pentium, but I think the P4 is CISC

Both (a) AND (c) are correct. Hard drives often use processors from ARM. Printers often use i960 RISC.

dunno

Network Neighborhood.

<<
98. In Novel what does the "rights" command do? ___

Sets user permissions for access, etc.. IIRC...

<<
99a. Where could you find a UNIX Computer? ___

You can find UNIX computers in engineering companies, ISPs, just about anywhere really.

Unix? Linux? Win2k? ?

But any of those OSs is suitable for an Internet Server - Unix, Linux, or Win2k (with IIS muahahah).

QWERTY

Yes.

DPI???

It's CPS, which stands for Characters Per Second. But it's an OLD measure reserved for dot matrix printers.

97. Apple's chooser function is similar to Window's icon of ___

The chooser was used to specify printers and to connect to appletalk networks, so I would say it is the same as the My Network Places and Printer icons

101. Which is the older PC?
(a)IBM XT (b)IBM 286 AT (c)IBM PS/2 (d)IBM 386 SX

I thought that the IBM XT was the oldest there. 1982-83 era.

Only one problem with that Sean, if you limit yourself to 128MB that means that you have a maximum of 32MB per SIMM. I know that 64MB SIMMs exist, and a quick look on Pricewatch revealed 128MB SIMMs for sale. I'm fairly sure that the possible answers for this question are wrong. I think the maximum possible RAM should be 512MB, since I don't recall any 256MB SIMMs ever being produced either.

The Pentium series of CPUs are CISC based. Printers and most, if not all, Apple systems use RISC processors.

This quiz has some questions in it that are out of date. That's why there is some confusion.

125. A printer speed is determined/measured by:
(a)CPS (b)DPI (c)RES (d)AST (e) CDROM

Back before Laser printers or inkjets, dot-matrix and daisy wheel printers where all measured by how many CPS (characters per second). These printers had poor graphics capability and that's one of the reasons why PPM isn't used.

Plus some of the questions are just dumb.
