The earth's orbit around the sun is elliptical. What is at the focus? The center of the sun? Or the center of mass of the earth & sun?

The second one, if I remember my kinematic physics correctly.

Because our ellipse is so shallow and the sun is so massive compared to the Earth, however, the focus is probably still somewhere inside the sun.

Most definitely.

IIRC, the moon is so large compared to earth that some people wanted to call us a binary planetary system, but the debate was setteled when it was determined that since the center of mass of the pair was still inside the surface of the earth, the moon is still just a moon.
