Easy one: Need a recommendation for a quiet HSF for Socket A Duron

I have the Duron 750 machine, with ABIT KT7-RAID, running it as a server. Machine is loud with the Vantec FCE 62540D and like 4 case fans. I need a quiet HSF with decent performance for my Duron to lower the noise. Any suggestions?

I've heard about these SVC HSFs. Besides being quiet, do they do a good job cooling? Just wondering so when I do get my Athlon XP machine, I will want something that cools well and is also quiet. Thanks!

For the Duron 750 a Taisol 742 with stock fan will be more that plenty. Can probably get a new one for $20 or less.

SVC just sells it, they don't make it. Dr Thermal is made by Thermal-Integration and most online retailers sell them. It's a very good cooler and it is quiet. See here. It'd do fine for any XP cpu and even for light oc'ing. If you plan heavey oc'ing then you might want to consider the AX-7 which uses an 80mm fan. With that you can choose the fan you want. I use it with a 80mm 37cfm quiet fan and it cools like a polar bear on any oc'ing I do.

Thanks!

Okay, looking at some of the reviewers who bought the "Doctor", some still say it is a little loud. Again, I don't need performance as much as silence. Even if it is just a $5 HSF, I want to quietest HSF around. Thanks again for your help!

np 🙂

As for the fan, the one I had with it was very quiet. Either the others got one with a different fan or the Dr Thermal fans are like thermaltake fans in which they are inconsistant and vary with noise with the same model.

The most quiet fan i've found is the panaflo 80mm goin 24cfm @ 21dBA at bgmicro. Of course you still need to be able to hook an 80 up to your hs. If you can't I'll have to do a lil more research for a quiet 60 mm panaflo. Lemme know if you need the 60mm, would give me an excuse to spend an hour lookin for the quiet 60's.

Not that it matters but I'm a member now 🙂 yay for my 20th post

Well, how hard would it be for me to remove the fan from the Vantec FCE-62540D and use the quieter fan?

I have a svc gc-68 on my duron 1.2. It's a great hsf, very quiet with the stock fan, plus it's rather inexpensive. I got mine from case-mod.com for 15 shipped, with free Artic Alumina. I went from a volcano 6cu+ to this and the difference was unbelievable. On my Epox 8kta3+, the chipset fan is louder than the one on my heatsink. Svc sells it for $13.

My friend has the volcano 7 on his xp1900+ and it's super quiet, and only 18 from SVC as well, would probably work just as good on your duron.

if u are not oc the duron, it should be cool enough to use a low volume fan like 80 mm panaflo. My suggestion is:
1. use some heat glue gun to make the new fan to stick to the heat sink, or
2. like me, use a used CDROM (or may be more to make a tunnel), cut it to right size with holes for 60mm and holes for 80mm, cut the middle a opening and find some screws that fit, or
3. use some thing to tie the fan to the heat sink (like those that tie up your bread),
4. use a 80mm grill and put it off-side (rotate may be 45 degree) and see if u can screw the grill to the heat sink in between the grill, if yes, then your 80mm fan can set on top it.
....
be creative, many option....
and yes you can buy a new one and hope it is quiet....

34 dba for Doctor look loud to me on paper... look for below 30

I agree with The Dancing Peacock, check out the SVC GC68. It uses an 80mm fan rated @ 28dBA, and you can always replace the fan with a 21dBA Panaflo if you want it to be even quieter.

I would recommend ALPHA PAL8045 HS. Comes with 80mm fan. extremely quiet @ 2K rpm and cool my Athlon XP 2000+ very well @47C with normal office load. If you want to cool it down more, you can opt for faster fan like 4K rpm or 6K rpm but you will sacrifice quietness.

Agree with both of you. I just ordered the SVC GC68 from Silicon Valley Compucycle, for less than $15, and less than 30dBA is just what I am looking for. Anyone know if Silicon Valley Compucycle is a good place to buy from?

BTW, I happen to have a Globalwin FOP32-1 from my old ABIT BP6 with Celeron 366, and it is not doing such a good job cooling, but it is much quieter. CPU temps are hovering around 56C.... yikes! I can't wait until the SVC GC68 comes.

anyone know of any REALLY short hs and fan combos for socket a? i'm builing a case in very narrow area, and i need a hs and fan that will protrude minimally... help?

Look for heatsinks made for use in rackmount server cases. These are usually referred to as "1U" heatsinks. They'll be quite short, but are also louder than the bigger heatsinks since they need to use faster fans.

Wow! nice price there! talk about a sale. price of the gv68 at svc almost cut in half!
Hard to beat?

Try this for 5.99. 🙂
they also has the low profile 1U rackmout CPU color for $14.99

or the GC10 for $2.19 !!

imho svc is a great place to do business with. i have placed 3 orders, got everything within 3 or 4 days each time, and wasn't raped on shipping charges. i think my biggest order was 3 rounded cables, 2 80mm fans, a gc68 plus some misc. stuff and shipping was only $4.
