lol, I forgot I did that back in march, and then I got something in the mail the other day saying that ING was reporting that I had $50 in interest income to the IRS....so I had to pay taxes on it

Of course, what did you expect? Nothing is 100% free without some strings attached.

Just like a regular bank account at Bank of America or Washington Mutual they're going to need your name, birthdate, social security number, address, phone, etc. I doubt they'll check your credit since you're not getting a credit card, just to identify you.

You deposit $1, you get $50 free, sounds like a great deal to me.

I just would like to add that I have been pretty happy with ING as wll. I started when they had 4.25% interest, but now at 2.30% it still higher than my pathetic WellsFargo Savings which is 0.01% (yes, not even a one percent!). And after all, additional $50/month in interest never hurts

ING has real good to me. In Dallas, I mainly used Chase bank, because that's what my parents used..when I came to College Station though, I needed a Wells Fargo account, since their ATMs are everywhere and there isn't a single Chase one anywhere in this area. So here's what I do - I use the ING account to move money thru between the accounts I also have some amount that I keep in there, earning interest, its a good deal. And they move my money for free

No and no. Also no minimum balance requirement, I believe.

The best deal is to do the $50 rather than the $25 referral.

The only place that will do deposits and withdrawals from ING Direct is www.cashedge.com - they would allow you to add ING direct savings into their online money tranfer account with any other bank you want. However cashedge takes their time transferring money - up to a week. ING does the same service in 2-3 days tops. And you can link up to 3 bank accounts to ING to move money between them, all you need to do is to send a 1$ check to be deposited in your name with a note "link" in memo section. They will post 1$ in your account lock it for 5 business days (to verify that it was you who requested the link). They will not accept starter checks or the checks with address other than the one used to open account.

I too have an ING Direct account. The only thing to keep in mind, is that they can take up to 4 days to transfer money from your account with them back into your checking account. Not a big thing, and when you add the $50.00 tubro tax bonus, they are still a great deal.

You forgot that the interest is compounded monthly. The formula that would give the total for any month T would be 4000(1 + (0.023/12))^T.

Total interest after 1 month = $ 7.67
Total interest after 2 months = $15.35
Total interest after 3 months = $23.04
Total interest after 4 months = $30.75
Total interest after 5 months = $38.48

I have turbo tax the basic version. They added an "INGDIRECT" link on my desktop without my permission after I installed the software. Sigh...

Are there any maintenance or closing fees? E-trade has charged me $90 maintenance fees which pissed me off (no activity, minimizing losses, + preserving cash), so I closed the account, and they charged $75. $75 used to buy 1 share of a stock I have, and now it buys 10 or so... So I was charged for keeping my money there, not trading, then taking my money out. It's a simple scam at E-trade, and I'm worried that some of these other online places will do the same. Note: none of those charges existed when I signed up.

Anyone seen similar maintenance, no activity, or closing account fees at Ingdirect or other places?
