ING seems to be quite an attractive option. I had opened my account with Charter One some time back at 3% interest. Was great till last month when my interest was dropped to 1.5%.

Anyway, it's a checking account (energised checking) and still gives the highes ratet on any checking account. Also, you can use their well established 'physical' banks.

it's nice but they keep on changing their rates.

edit: FYI, for those of you who purchased TurboTax this year, forget about the referral bonuses and instead use this link for a $50 new account bonus. You will need your TT product key.

Sweet. Thanks DerProfi

I've been using them for 2 years and it's been great. Two complaints though:
-withdrawals take up to 3 days to post.
-after a deposit, they hold on to your money for about a week before you can withdraw it again(they start giving you interest 2 days after the deposit though).

It's still better interest than some CDs. If you're interested in joining PM me and I'll send you a link where you can get a $25 for free when you open an account.

All of those banks keep dropping the rates now, but from experience Ing Direct always stayed very aggressive with their rates, so even if they are not the best right now, wait a month and most likely they will be.

ING direct is a highly rated bank in excellent shape with high reserves; It is much safer than a lot of banks with branches, etc.

If you have taxdirect you can get a $50 bonus, see DerProfi's link above.
If you do not you can get a $25 bonus here:

Thanks guy 😉

Congratulations! Simply by opening and funding your account with ING DIRECT today you will receive a $50 account opening bonus! Our Orange Saving Account earns the highest rate in the nation with no fees and no minimums.

I'd recommend you contact your nearest investment expert to get into a short term fund, if interest is what you're after. I currently invest $500 a month in the SENTINEL SHORT MATURITY fund with an interest rate solidly at 4.8%. Great stuff! Plus it acts just like a savings account, in which you can remove your money at any time without fees.

Jugs

FYI, it's not really interest; however, they invest in AAA quality government bonds, which is among the safest you can get. Their expense ratio is something like 0.77%, which is actually pretty good for that category, IIRC. It's done extraordinarily well for similar funds (3 year return of 7% as opposed to -0.2% for the category).

However, there's still risk involved. I may use this fund as a short term place to park money in a more active portfolio, but I wouldn't use it as a savings account. I still use ING for an emergency fund (only about 5k), and I earn a nice $10-15 a month in interest.

Thanks for all the info, but I need an account to "hide" from the wife. If it has to be tied to my regular bank account, she'll surely know.

:Q

I'm not sure if you have to have a definite tie to a bank account... I know you can mail deposits to them.

Added "bonus" is that when they take the $1.00 out (if you're funding the minimum), they'll often put much of it back in your linked account via the two small deposits (that you need to confirm)..

Email me or PM me if you need the $25 link.

Quick question:

What was ING's Orange interest rate before it was 2.3%? Do you guys see it going up or down in the near term, and how often does it do so?

THANKS!

The rate was 2.25% until a few days ago, perhaps even a week. 2.25% was the lowest the rate has gone to. It's highest was 6%. Short term forcast is that the rate is on the way up.

I thought referral links were a no-no at Anandtech.

Thanks for the heads up. I just opened my account with the $50 TurboTax bonus. ING pays double the interest my current savings account does and I won't be so apt to spend the money if it's harder to get to!

is there a site where it will tell you how much intrest you gain in a overall year with X amount of money in there? i would like to see how much intrest i would gain if i put X amount of money in there

Yeah, to get to it, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Calculator. Put in X amount of dollars multiplied by the interest rate.

Anyone find a way to use Paypal as a funding source (or at least use ING to "verify" a Paypal account?)? I already tried the usual method but the deposits were returned (source cannot accept electronic funding, or something like that).

PM or email me if you need a $25 account bonus link

Supposedly there is a $50 link that doesn't require a referral, but no one gets a second bonus for referring. I missed this when I signed up the other day for $25. I'm not sure what the link is, but it's on FW somewhere. If anyone wants to be nice however and sign up for the $25 one, you can also PM me.
