Easy (I'm sure) networking question...

1. I'm simply trying to connect two computers (one xp other xp w/sp1) together using my little linksys router. I've never had any difficulty in the past getting the two computers to connect, but not now. I have everything set on automatic, no netbios protocols. I even have trouble getting one of the computers to recognize itself as being on a network. If I go to "repair" the connection, neither will acknowledge getting a new IP. So what's up?

2. I set up 2 monitors for my mom using a Radeon 9600 and everything works fine, except for one little thing. If I am using the secondary monitor, all the prompts for it show on the other (default) monitor. So, if I am in wordperfect, for instance, and wanted to print my doc, the print window shows up on the default monitor. Is there a switch somewhere I can flip that will make the pop-up window show up on the monitor I'm working on?

1. Are you certain that DHCP is enabled on the router? Sounds like neither computer is finding a DHCP server.

2. That's one of the hassles of living with dual monitors. Some apps will let you drag the dialog box to the other monitor and it'll remember that position. Some apps won't. One little program that helps is UltraMon - well worth it for dual monitor use. There a free trial version.

3. (Bonus answer) upgrade that XP system to AT LEAST SP1. Pre-SP1 XP has some major security holes in it and it's no longer supported for Windows updates.

ok, thanks guys. I'll try that and see what happens. (I figured this question was too simple to be posted in networking, but that's just me :))

Do not hang-up on the DHCP issue it is usually On by default, it might be that your computers Network settings are Not configure correctly.
