easy acoustic guitar songs

I just picked an old beat up acoustic guitar. I somehow managed to string it myself, and coerced a friend into tuning it for me ( am tone deaf). Now I'm ready to begin to learn how to play. I've been looking at tabs for some easy songs, and can do the main riff to Metallica's Enter Sandman, and the Acoustic intro to Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss (Tab) but thats pretty much it. I dont know any chords, and probably couldnt play them even if I did. Its a challenge even switching from one string to another at this point. 🙂 So I was wondering if any of you could recommend some REALLY easy acoustic songs that might be good to learn, ar at least attempt to. Many thanx.

Try some praise music tabs from Christian Guitar Resources if you're into that sort of music. There's some really easy stuff in there. If not, search the OLGA for a song you like that you think sounds easy. You should be able to find tabs for a lot of popular music on the OLGA.

Ummm... I'm sort of not religious 🙂 thanx for the suggestions, though, if they're easy to play, who cares what the lyrics are about? 🙂

i believe green day - good riddance was my first song. ALthough it does have chords in it, they are pretty standard basic open chords that you should know if you continue to play guitar. and addtiionally, although some of the song is done in fingerpicking style, you can just play the chords flat out and it will sound ok.

the first song i leard how to play was smoke on the water

but just that one part that goes Bah bah bah, bah bah ba da, bah bah bah ba baaaaaaaaaaaa

you can play it all on one string

i suck at guitar

That site has some other guitar resources other than just strictly Christian stuff. I mean, there really is no difference between a G chord and a Christian G chord, right? 😛

Try finding some recording of acoustic versions of rock songs to get the right feel - you can't play an acoustic guitar like an electric one, it's two completely different styles. Fingerpicking is hard to do if it's the first thing you're learning. Try learning a few chords first then go on to the fingerpicking later.

pthbb, i have both an electric and an acoustic, and i play them the same

oh, i forgot, i suck

If you're just learning you'll DEFINITELY want to forgo picking and just learn chords for the time being. Acoustic tabs for the songs you seem to like might be a bit more difficult. You might want to look back at some of the stuff from the 70s. Zepplin, Stones, Eagles (a LOT of Eagles songs are extremely easy to learn), CCR, etc.

I am just learning to play some acoustic guitar myself. I won a guitar on egay for $11.25 (!) in a fluke auction a couple years back but I never really picked it up until recently. I know about a dozen chords now. I can play some parts of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, Weezer's Island in the Sun, and Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer. The tabs for those and other learnable songs are in these free online guitar lessons at about.com. I really like how those lessons are written, so straightforward and they start at n00b level.

Hope that helps!🙂

Klee58, thank you so much for that link! That tutorial is written perfectly for a musically-uninclined person such as myself. And now I have proper pick technique. 🙂 Woohoo! I can play a G chord now! (is that anything like a G String? mwahahaha) BTW, parrotheader, what do you mean by "the songs I seem to like?" You mean death metal songs might be a wee bit too tricky for a beginner? 😛 I actually love classic rock as well, so Led Zeppelin, GnR, and et al are actually great choices. Ohhh, I want to Lynard Skynard so bad....! 😛

[ego]Get ready for the best post you'll ever read[/ego] 🙂

Tabcrawler is an awesome source for tabs, and it even has a pretty good forum for asking questions like this and advice etc.

Probably the easiest stuff to play is by Nirvana (I don't like the music, but it's SUPER simple). About a Girl is probably the easiest song ever. Just try it and it'll get you used to switching between E and G chords pretty good 🙂

Also, once you get a few easy chord songs down, try some songs that use arpeggios. When playing an arpeggio, you just hold your fingering for a chord, and just play one or two notes at a time and go up and down the strings or in some sort of pattern. Collective Soul - December is an excellent example. The main part of the song is just a G-chord (EADGBE = 320033) with two or three extra notes thrown into the arpeggio. Cool sounding song too.

Over The Hills And Far Away

I call bullsh!t. 🙂

That's definitely a cool song to play once you get better though.

Damn damn damn! Forgot to add this in to the last post. Here's how to tune your guitar.

It won't matter if you're tone deaf at all. Most people try to tune their strings by listening to the pitch. This is very difficult to do accurately. Instead, make use of your physics and do it with beats. If two notes are close to the same pitch they will add and subtract from each other and will produce a "beat" that can easily be heard. If two notes are exactly the same, they will produce a perfectly smooth sounding note when played together. If they're slightly different, they will sound a little bit off, and will add in beats as they add and subtract. The beats have a wah-wah-wah-wah sound to them. The farther away the notes are, the faster the beats are. Basically here's how I tune my guitar.

Make sure the low string is an E. I then tune my next string up (the A string) down slightly, so I know it's a bit flat. I then play the fifth fret of the low E string and the A string at the same time. Just in case you don't know, these two notes normally are the same. Because the A string is a bit flat, there will be a beating that goes like: wahwahwahwahwah. With the strings still ringing, I slowly tighten the A string and listen as the beats slow down: wahwahwah-wah-wah--wah----waah-------waahh------------waaahhhh---------------waaaaahhhhh----------------------------------------waaaaaaaaa

When the beats stop, sound the two strings again. If you don't hear any beats, they are in tune. Repeat all the way up (remember: 5th fret on E string = A, 5th fret on A = D, 5th fret on D = G, 4th fret on G = B, 5th fret on B = E)
