I'll be in Philly the second week of October, I've never been to the East coast. After my meetings, I'll have up to five days to see the sights. Where should I go, what should I see? I was figuring on getting a room in a "central location" and renting a car to see the sights. What cool stuff is within about a 2 to 3 hour drive from the Philly area? Thankx in advance for your input.

If you're inclined to drive 3 hours, I always tell people they should go to gettysburg. 'course, I'm partial to historical sites and stuff, which Phily is chock full of, but there's something about that battlefield that brings a lot of introspect to a dark time in our country's history.

2-3 hour drive from Philadelphia includes Washington DC and New York City. There is quite a bit to do in Philadelphia alone with some great museums like the Franklin Institute of Science, and historical such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell area.

If it's your bag.... you could go to Lancaster PA (Amish Country) or Hershey PA (Hershey Park!!) or even Stroudsberg PA (RailRoad history)

2-3 hours from Philly?

Well first off, there's all the stuff IN Philly--Art museum, the zoo, Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, Franklin Institute, etc.
Then there's....
Clubbing on Delaware Avenue
Lancaster/PA dutch country
Gettysburg
New Hope, which is awesome in the fall/spring when it's still warm enough to sit at an outdoor bar and watch all the motorcycles, cool cars and weird people go by. There's also cool artsy-fartsy shops, overpriced secondhand stores and GREAT restaurants like Havana. Also a good cigar/pipe shop and a hot-sauce shop.
A football or hockey game may be in order, too.
South Street is worth wandering through.
Longwood Gardens and the other stuff in the Chadds Ford area is interesting, and it's a hit with the ladies.
King of Prussia Mall, one of the largest, although it's just another mall...you won't find much there you can't find in any other malls.

In NJ:
The NJ Aquarium in Camden is cool, and right across the river from PHL.
Princeton, which is kind of like New Hope only instead of hippies and goths it's Asians and yuppies, more overpriced shops and less outdoor bars.
You have to go to the beach!!! At that time of year, though, there won't be a whole lot to do--most of the resort towns start to turn into ghost towns, and most of the non-resort towns don't have much anyway, but it's definitely worth checking out. Some of the towns further north like Point Pleasant or Seaside my have more going on, but farther away.
There's ALWAYS action in Atlantic City, of course.
The Cape May zoo on Rt 9 is well worth visiting.
You could pick up an issue of Weird New Jersey and go hunting for spooks, loonies, or wavers.
There is an excellent stationary wave at the Delaware Water Gap. Bring a surfboard or kayak and a wetsuit :)
Horse racing at Meadowlands? Dunno when the season ends, though.

You're like 3 hours from NYC, and you could easily get there by train if you don't want to drive. Of course, there's a boatload of stuff to do up there.

You're also not far Baltimore, MD where you can check out the inner harbor.

There's also some decent beaches in Delaware, and tax-free shopping.

Well, there's a couple suggestions ;)

Pat's/Geno's is for n00bs and tourists. You might want to wander over there just to say you did. Most of the legit denizens of South Philly only go to those places for kicks at obscene times like 2:30AM on Christmas Eve just to keep them on their toes. The quality of the cheesesteaks isn't really worth the trip.

If you want to get into Cheesesteaks, you'd be well-served to read this astoundingly thorough article on the good and bad cheesesteaks in the area. Don't forget to read the reviews. You'll be interested to note that on a scale of 1 - 5, Geno's got an average score of "3" while Pat's got a paltry "1."
I was surprised that Mastrocola's in Conshy only got a "2" but the more I think about it, no one goes to Lenny's for cheesesteaks, it's all about roast pork there.

Sorry to thread-hijack :D

i grew up in philly...
but honestly, there's not much worth seeing.

you can go check out that lil' dinky liberty bell.
but really after a min of starring at it, it gets old very fast.

you can go see the art museum,
but it's not any more special than any other major art museums.
(besides, they took away the rocky statue... ;))
beautiful view at night time though.

if you don't mind driving... there's that amish people that you can go see.
but only if you like smelling dong.

the city itself, unless you're coming from a hickory farm...
has nothing that other major city wouldn't.

just not that special of a city... i guess.

if this is your first trip out to the east,
then i'd strongly suggest that you spend some time in NYC.

it's definate got more places to go and visit.

you can't find more ethnically diverse place.
it's rich in culture.

not to mention good food.

and unless you like to drive, i'd suggest that you take a train up.
the city is hell if you have a car.

South Street in Philly. Must go after dark, preferably on a weekend. Lots of fun.

In/around Philly:
The Liberty Bell, the old US Capitol, the state-hall where Penn is on the peak, the state-house
The art museum (not sure of the name, but it's *very* good)
Drive up the Deleware valley to the Delaware water gap. Very pretty, countryside and river. A boat tour would be great, but I don't know if you could find one.
Visiting Amish country can be fun (Lancaster County)

I see many others have posted since I started.

Jzero hit most of the hotspots, most of the clubbing is done on Delaware Ave, I'd recommend Egypt/Adrenaline/Exit/Envy if you're in the 18-24 crowd that likes to dance... if you want upscale "trendy" bars go to "Olde City" which is on around 2nd and Market. It's a little pricey but you'll meet some fine hunnies there...
Check out South Street if you wanna see some freaks!! Also you can buy a bunch of cool stuff on South Street (lotsa imported stuff)...
Maybe you culd line up a concert in Camden, NJ at the Ecenter there... or check out an Eagle's/Flyer's game... my.02

Excellent article on CheeseSteaks jZero! Now I know where to go next time I'm in town.

The best one I remember was a little place in Lower Marion. Or was it Upper Marion?? Anyway, it was just a little pizza place, and had the most excellent CheeseSteak--the sauce was the best!

LOL Hoitah...you sell Philly way too short. In all honesty, my trips to NYC leave me unimpressed...aside from the touristy things, it seems like Philly without the same historical significance and with a lot more traffic.

Ok, as a resident of Lancaster County, let me tell you right now it's not worth coming to see the amish. I'll spoil it right now that the Amish "farms" are fake and they don't live that plain and holy anymore. List of grievances:
[*]Aluminum siding on houses and barns
[*]Generators for the NUMEROUS electric lights and cash registers in their stores
[*]HUGE bank accounts (my dad audited several of dem dare amish)

Now while I have been to the Amish tourist farms, and they have been quite edu-mucational, the Amish in the tourist part of the county are frauds. If you want to see real Amish, come to the northern or southern part of the county where they're more real. There are several nice farms on 222/Beaver Valley Pike which seem to remain true to their beliefs.

guyver01 meant to say Strasburg, not Stroudsberg.

And no one loves a cheesesteak more than I do, but...Cheez Whiz on a steak sandwich? C'mon! That's like putting ketchup on a filet.

Only provolone on a cheesesteak. Cheez Whiz, indeed.

Thanks for the cheesesteak article, jZero! My sister lives in Philly and I normally just go to Pats and then to Genos right afterwards (before my stomach knows it's full :) ) I'm going to check out some of those other places now and see what I'm missing. The 4 and 5 rated places must be great, because I love the steaks from Geno's and that only got a 3! :)

Ahh you beat me too it, I generally can't stand even going in the city, I do live in a suburb outside of it though, even then it bugs me when people go on and on about Pat's steaks like it is the 2nd coming of the God of food.

Glad to help my grease-loving brethren. I can't personally vouch, but a friend of mine from South Philly knows the owner of Tony Luke's and swears up and down the that cheesesteaks are to die for, and of the ones I've had, I pretty much agree with their assessments (although i think I'd give Geno's a 2 as well), so I think the article is pretty objective...at least as objective as you can be when it comes to taste.

Daniel I hear ya! I had friends at school (Trenton State/TCNJ) who would drive all the way down there on a Sunday afternoon! WTF! I'd just as soon go to Hoagie Haven in Princeton it's closer and better. If we're going to drive that far south, we might as well go to Gaetano's in W'boro!

MAN, you folks are awesome...thanks for all the ideas. Having never been back East, I wanna make the most of this trip. Sounds like I might want to stretch it into a few more days if possible. Thanks again!

I guess I don't know as much about the Amish as I thought I did!
What's wrong with Aluminum siding and large bank accounts?
