Easiest Way to Transfer OS to another drive?

ok, i have a computer that my dad uses. i want to rip out his harddrive because it matches mine and i want to setup a RAID. i have another 20GB harddrive laying around, that i want to use in that machine. i can't do a reformat, because he has a lot of stuff on there, program wise, that i don't have a disk for. plus i kind of want it to go unnoticed (no i'm not a 15 year old kid, but my pops hates it when people touch his computer, even though i bought it for him).

i don't have ghost, well i do but it is OEM so it won't work on that board. would it be as simple as just plugging in the second harddrive as a slave, then copying everything from C to whatever the new drivfe would be labeled? then unplug the 40GB drive, change the smaller 20GB drive to master, then plugging it in. woudl this work?

what brand is the replacement drive? if it is maxtor or western digital then you can download the utilities from the respective company and use them to format and copy the entire old drive to the replacement drive

not sure on your OS, but they dont usually take well to changing their boot device from IDE to RAID or similar. its possible, but can be a pain in the @ss

sorry took so long. the old drive and new one are WD's. i'ma look for that utility thanks.

abztrak, i'm not tring to put the old drive into raid. i wanna take the old drive to use in MY raid. but i need to put that info on another drive before i take it.

oh I see... I misread it.

at any rate, get ahold of a copy of drivecopy or ghost or similar.... easy to find on the web or just buy it.

Like Abzstrak said, your safest bet would be to use Powerquests' Drive copy...I swear by that program.

P.S. I'm going to tell your dad😉
