I tend to use virtual dub, but it refuses to do certain types such as divx. Anyone know of a program that will take ANY format video and convert to ANY other format (assuming I have the codec of course). Basically I'm looking for something same idea as virtualdub but does not need to have the edit and such.

Or is there a way to make vdub accept outputting to divx? the option is there, but it wont let me do it. Says that format is unacceptable.

Vdub does divx, you sure you have the codec installed? Hit up www.doom9.org and get the gordian knot codec pack. While you're there you may want to get the gordian knot rip pack as well, it contains virtualdubmod which will often handle things vdub won't (though as I said, divx shouldn't be a problem).

While we're on the subject, what are people using to capture and edit hi-def / h.264 in a windows environment?

Actually I have gordian knot, I totally forgot to even try that one...

Anyway I'm converting a video to cinipak format we'll see how that turns out... basically it needs to be playable in powerpoint. If this does not work out I'll try gk. For some reason vdub wont do divx OR xvid. It just errors out when I go to encode, saying its not an acceptable format. I have the codec otherwise it would not be in the list to choose from and I would not be able to play divx either.

Ok that did not work either. at 70% it crapped out with same error as virtualdub. I have the latest version of divx I don't know whats going on anymore. Think I'll just have to live with this 1GB 20 minute video... I wish I knew how to create movies like ones you get off p2p programs. 700MB for full high def 120 minute video... don't know how they do it. Just a small 20 minute clip for me is over a gig. Should I maybe use a mac for stuff like this, or Linux? I can just setup a VM on my server if that would make it easier.

Don't bother with a mac or linux, it sounds like a codec or file error. And contrary to popular opinion, lots of the best software and freeware out there for video and picture editing is available for Windows, sometimes exclusively.

Did you encode the video, or is it possible it was encoded with a newer version of divx than what you have installed? You can try uninstalling through add/remove programs, deleting the directory if needed and then reinstalling the latest from divx's website. It's also possible the file is corrupted.

As for 700mb 2 hour videos, they look pretty bad on a 22" widescreen. Wait till you see a 4.3gb h.264 video in 1280x720 ;)

The video was ripped with autoGK from a DVD. It's just a 20 minute clip they want to play for a church presentation within a power point. The resulting video is 1GB, I want to get that down to like, maybe 100-200MB. I tried converting it to xvid, no go, divx, no go either. I could put it in premiere and then do it from there but I find premiere is also flaky and is hit or miss so I have not bothered yet.
