One of my sons constantly has excess wax in his ear canals. There are several home remedies that work well, as well as things you can purchase at the pharmacy to loosen the excess wax. I've also heard of some sort of candles that you put into the ear and light... they supposedly draw out all the wax in the ear canal. Never tried it (with my son) and I don't want to, but several people swear by it.

That practice would exempt you from Father of the Year awards. 😛

Some ears lack the ability to clean themselves. You can go to an ear clinic and get an ear lavage. They flush out the wax with water and a solution.

For what it's worth... I just googled the ear candling, and it does appear, in fact, to be pretty much a sham (edit: which I always suspected based on what people were claiming). While the people who use it claim that it works, dozens of people have scientifically tried to verify it - and it doesn't work. But, if you do a google for "ear wax" +candle, you may be amazed at how many home-remedy sites list these stupid things. (and for about $12 for 4 candles)

If I recall correctly, my wife has my son lie on his side and fills his ear (one side at a time) with a hydrogen peroxide solution. This tends to loosen the ear wax and causes the bigger clumps to break up. It's sort of a soak, flush rinse repeat type of process.

Hydrogen peroxide? STOP DOING THAT, RIGHT NOW! Hydrogen peroxide breaks off skin, that's why it burns when you colour your hair with hairpaint on hydrogen peroxide-basis. Excessive usage of hydrogen peroxide on/in the ears of your son/anyone may (and will when done long enough) cause deafness.

Or, to follow the words of Kramer the wise: What? 😛

Uhhh, no, not straight hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide solution (2% I believe). If you'll google, you'll find this suggested at quite a few medical oriented (not alternative) sites, although most say go to the doctor first. Since he's never had ear trouble other than the excessive wax, there's really no problem with it. I also believe it is one of the ingredients in over the counter treatments.

Heh, I just today had my ears syringed (left one had been blocked for a few weeks).

Feels like I have super-human hearing now. 😀

Don't use cotton swabs... those can just shove it in further... use a pen cap... especially the ones from those clear Bic pens... they're shaped like a shovel! 😀

u know whats nasty? people who dont clean it at all and when they lean forward, u see all of the built up ear wax thats coming out EWWW@

Are you calling his canal gay?

Anywho, dont even think of using the burning sh1t in your ears. I know we had a big thread on this issue not too long ago.
Try searching the archives.

Forget all the Bullshtt you read so far, here is the answer......... CATS, cats love earwax, it takes some time and effort but you can train a cat to clean your ears for you, your ears will never be cleaner.

p.s. consider having your s.o. present to handle anything that may pop up.

get one of those scoopes.. (sorry dont know the name of it) and scoop out your earwax. very cheap, like the one your doctor uses

"Straight" hydrogen peroxide is actually a liquid rocket fuel. The medical stuff is a weak solution.

You are not supposed to stick anything in your ear to get ear wax out as I have heard.
Q-tips are a big no no.
Go with the solution stuff, but I would go to the doc for this stuff.
I should get my ears cleaned out too. Has been several years and I bet my hearing will increase big time with a cleanup.

*sighs* Pooh, I thought you were using straight hydrogen peroxide. I believe it's safe to use hydrogen peroxide in concentrations up to 5%.
