Fresno floating out to the Ocean? Not exactly a bad thing. 😀 😉
LOL! 😀

BTW, I was in the process of switching pants when the shaking started...

My first thought was "Get under the desk"
My second thought was "Holy crap, I'm gonna plow right through my computer if I get under there!"
My third thought was "But they're gonna find me with no pants and with an open ATOT window if I don't find cover!"

But by then, the shaking stopped 🙂

Haha... only a couple minutes and this thread is pretty full already... I'm MSM'ing with a friend in San Fran and she's saying the same thing... WEAK!!! I was actually running around my house to see what my roomies were thinking... guess I should've gone under a doorway, huh? 🙂

Heh...most quakes, I only have enough time to think "Wait, is that an earthquake?" by the time it's over 🙂

b0mbrman: Same here... The one in Seattle was a >little< bit bigger... enough to make me sway a bit while standing... but this one was nothing...

I guess I shouldn't joke about this though, since my relatives went through the ones in Taiwan the past couple years. Guess this one was a TON better than having one of those.

What does it mean when it says, "Quality: Good"?

Quality
To assist non-seismologists in evaluating the reliability of an earthquake location, we assign a "quality" to each location. It is based on the values of Nph, Dmin, Erho, Erzz, and Rmss (described below) for the computed earthquake location. The quality is given as "excellent", "good", "fair", "poor", and "unknown" reflecting each contributing seismic network's definition of how the quality relates to the above values. For example, parameters for an earthquake located by a global seismic network might result in the assignment of an "excellent" quality, whereas the same parameters would result in the assignment of a "poor" quality had they been calculated for an earthquake located by a regional seismic network monitoring an area the size of Los Angeles. We assign an "unknown" value if the contributing seismic network does not supply the necessary information to generate a quality.

so, i guess it means that the quality of the information is good, ie the location/size are probably accurate, i guess

I love the SF Chronicle - first news on the quake...

05-13) 22:16 PDT SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook San Francisco on Monday, rattling buildings across the bay area.

The quake was felt by thousands at the Compaq Center in San Jose where the San Jose Sharks were playing the Colorado Avalanche in a National Hockey League playoff game.

The upper stands of the arena shook strongly for about 10 seconds and light fixtures continued to sway for several seconds afterward. The game continued uninterrupted, however.

Updated to include:

The U.S. Geological Service reported a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 centered three miles southwest of Gilroy, outside San Jose.

Phone service was out in parts of San Jose.

The temblor was immediately followed by four earthquakes centered in the same area with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 2.5.

Buildings could be heard rumbling in Watsonville, about 100 miles south of San Francisco. Fire engines were seen on the streets in response to the quake.

i felt the quake.. in fremont..

5.2. eh.. very puny compared to loma prieta (sp?)..

What does it mean when it says, "Quality: Good"?

haha. probably good in the sense that it caused little to no damage.. kron had the gilroy mayor on and said they had some broken glass and some water pipes bursting..

gotta love the bump and grind 😀 It was a pretty long one- couple people dropped their drinks and a bit of nervous laughter.

I have felt a quake in years. well except for the bedroom

Almost brought back memories of 1989. 🙁

man, i remember when that happened... i was watching the A's vs Giants game on the tube with my dad..

My uncle was at Candlestick, he says the stands wavered, up and down, like water. I was about 6, I remember not knowing what was going on and grabbing on to a tree. 🙂 My dad drove into SF that night - says all the lights in the city were down and as he came over the hill and looked down on it, the only lights were from the headlights lining the streets. Eerie.

haha. time to go out and buy yourself a nice sturdy desk to hide yourself and the pc under... 😛

hotchic: yeah, that was the freaky stuff back then.. i took my 8th grade class picture that day.. eerie indeed.. only good thing that came out of that is our school district took 2 weeks or so for the cleanup.. and afterwards, we had to share our school with another jr. high school cuz there place was more damaged.. but then again, that meant 1/2 days... 🙂 oh i wish i were still a kid again. things were so much simplier back then..

anyways, let's all hope they fix that darn bay bridge before the next one.. at the rate they're going, that doesnt seem to likeley..

One of my roomies just came home from Borders... apparently, someone inside yelled "GET OUT!! GET OUT!!" and everyone ran outside. 🙂
