Earthquake!

Sounded like those videos a year ago which are supposed to be a viral ad. Maybe because I am already aware of them I heard it differently, preconceived, but it was bone chilling.

Tweeted by the Ottawa Citizen:

"Earthquake magnitude 5.1 (early data) 21 km north of Shawville, Quebec. Felt in Toronto. Quake was 9:43 a.m.; aftershock 10 minutes later"

~50km from here.

CBC Otttawa says it was 2 quakes.

"Earthquakes Canada says 2 quakes felt in region. 5.1 magnitude near Shawville & 4.2 magnitude near Braeside, Ont."

Scary stuff. That's close to home. Thankfully it's a small one, but still scary and makes you wonder if worse ones are in the future. One of our monitored COs is in that area, no damage to the building or equipment reported so far.

My folks felt it big time at their house near the Gatineau park. Had a few things come off of shelves but nothing else damaged. I guess the epicenter was around Shawville, so not far from them.

Canadians get all panicky over shake on ground... we get shit like this daily over here. Plus you're exaggerating. Here's the report by USGS.

4.4 19km NNE of Shawville, Canada2013-05-17 06:43:22-07:00
3.6 18km NE of Shawville, Canada2013-05-17 06:53:55-07:00

I was on a chairlift at Grand Targhee when a 4.3 quake hit yellowstone about 20 years ago. Honestly didnt even know until I got back to our condo and it was on the news. The chair kind of jumped a little and snow fell off the trees. But other than that had no idea it was a quake.

Otter Lake is my unofficial hometown where my family's from. Just a few miles north of Shawville. It's not often that the area makes international news. 🙂

When I was a kid I remember my uncle telling me that small earthquakes were common in Quebec. For the most part they were barely strong enough to shift the shelves a centimeter.
