i had an interesting thought just now. i was thinking that maybe the reason for all these earthquakes and volcanos that are starting now is because if the rising sea-level worldwide, increasing the pressure exerted on the plates and mantle... kinda like squeezing a pimple.

anyone know if there's any validity behind this thought?

I am going to have to say No.

It isn't like we are adding more mass to the surface of the earth. It was already there just slightly shifted from 1 spot to another. Plust the tectonic plates are anywhere between 12 to 120 miles thick rock. Even if sea levels rises a couple of feet that would be insignificant to the size and mass of earth's plates.

There is no validity to it. As stated, the mass has not changed, only been moved. If anything melting ice caps (if it were true) would lessen stresses on that area of land because ICE is denser than water, thus exerting more force on a given area.

Umm, ice floats for a reason and it isn't because it's more dense.

Nah. We're pumping all the oil out of the ground...removing the badly needed lubrication from the joints in the earth...:p

I know the mass hasn't changed, but the distribution of pressure has... I'm wondering if it's possible for that hange in load over the earth's sueface over time is enough to disrupt plate technotnics and volcanic activity.

Your on track but as the n.pole moves towards russia the crust and ice mass move oppeessed to one another as the ice wants to move faster than the crust because the mantle has been excited speeding up so to speak . Causing the Ice mass to move faster than the crust.

Ya its weird shit for sure but their is more weird shit happening also A subject I will avoid for a bit.

No just no. If anything it is lowering the pressure due to it spreading it over a greater area, and the effects of gravity are less the higher up something is.

You wouldn't want to drink with me . In real life I am the biggest ass you've ever seen . I don't hold back . Rude and cuss like hell. I do . TO most. The Shifting might do it, but I'll agree with ya that it seems unlikely.

I heard a radio article recently that said the melting ice caps were changing the earths shape due to the relocation of the water. That could possibly affect plate tectonics. I don't know the validity of the article I heard, but it was on NPR, and the people talking seemed smart :^D I've tried to find it since without any luck. It's an interesting hypothesis in any case.

The average depth of the ocean is 12,430 ft, raising it to 12,431 ft won't do much. The daily tidal effects of the Sun and Moon squeezing and expanding the diameter of the Earth do much more.
