Reposted, in my reply, below...

CNN reports Epicenter is Chino, Ca. It was 5.8, stronger than it felt, here.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said.

The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.

A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

Revised down to 5.4. Shake, rattle and roll.

It was large enough to get my adrenaline going. I have no idea where the epicenter was so I don't know what it was, there. Unless it was much stronger, there, or this was a pre-shock to a stronger shake to come, I'd call it a good "tourist grade" shaker -- strong enough for them to write home about.

latimes.com is offline, right now, if that's any indication.

Saw this thread, shot my brother an IM. He works and lives in Hollywood area. Said it happened 5 or 6 minutes ago and "I thought it was a fat guy upstairs running to the bathroom.... then it kept going."

Anyway, his internet connection is uninterrupted, so I assume all is well.

the sylmar quake in '71 was truly exciting... the bed went hopping across the floor to the sound of all the stuff in the cabinets hitting the floor... east end sfv rocked that day...

I'm surprised a 5.4 in LA is even considered newsworthy. Somebody's mocha must have got knocked over.

It's only considered newsworthy if many mocha's are knocked over. Anything over 5.0 is usually noted in the news.

For what its worth, my Dad lives within 20 miles of the epicenter. He was in a car at the time and felt nothing. Returning home, a few books fell off his bookshelves, a trip to his University office in a five story building, and he found a bunch of books fell off shelves.

A 5.4 to 5.8 quake is a relative pipsqueak, but the whole LA area is one crazy patchwork of earthquake faults. Some right on the main San Andreas fault and many well to the side. The real danger is that one more link is removed to prevent some major future quake. And there is little valid predicting.

Meanwhile the spring is being wound, the longer it has been since a major quake, the sooner the next big one will occur.
