Earthquake in Toronto... canadians are shaking in their boots

When my g/f told me their building just shook, usgs had nothing... even on their "real time" earthquake thing. My brother quipped that their USGS "real time" is probably like FEMA's "rapid response"...

It was in Canada. You know those Canucks are slow...took them a while to realize what it was and report it. 😀

USGS had nothing up 5 minutes after. My incident report was submitted well before they had any acknowledgment of it on their "real time" site.

Hmmm, I live just a few miles from Southfield and was blissfully unaware of any shakin' goin' on......

Felt it in Rochester, NY. Thought it was a person walking on roof (at work, second floor) beacuse they do sometimes. Then thought wow that person must be really heavy, then assumed it was from blasting somewhere 🙂

Felt it at the office in downtown Toronto. Everyone was all smiles since it was completely harmless here and barely ever happens. Ate up about twenty minutes I'd have otherwise spent working!

No one knows with earthquakes. We normally associate strong quakes with areas that are a plate boundaries, and not in the middle of continents like this Canadian quake.

But we must all remember one of the strongest earth quakes in recorded history occurred at such a middle continental site at New Madrid, Missouri.

But then again, such small 3-6 on the Richter scale quakes are very common in such areas. Is it just a small stress relief event or a precursor to a big one?

You tell my hairdresser and then we will all know.

But long odds, its just one of many small quakes.

The other thing to note is that such mid continent quakes tend to occur deep down in very strong non fractured rock. As a result, the earthquake shock waves propagate a long ways without losing much energy at distance.

But a 5.0 on the Richter scale quake is not that strong. And a very rare 7.0 + event quakes are very very rare events.

Felt it at home. Thought I developed a rare disease and lost all muscle control as my body was swaying side to side. Then I shrugged it off and watched Star Trek. An hour later my friend called me and asked me if I felt the quake...

45 minutes west of you and I felt nothing. A woman I work with who is not 5 miles from me said her whole home shook. Obviously the local geology affects whether the ground under you shakes or the energy passes by undiminished.
