Did anyone happen to see the show on Discovery last night about they 1906 Quake?

At the time, the city fathers wanted to down play the severity of the quake (so as not to scare away potential new Business to the area) they reported only 400 something dead (it was closer to 5000+) Pictures in the papers were retouched so as not to show the extent of the damage. Because of insurance coverage most buildings were reported as being destroyed by fire and NOT the quake itself. After the quake building codes were relaxed to encourage San Fan to be rebuilt faster (they had some big wingding planned for 1912), so the buildings built afterwords are MORE unsafe than the ones destroyed by the quake!

My advice is if you live in San Fran. MOVE. The next BIG one is due anytime in the next 20 years or so!

Or you could just retrofit? My neighbor across the street just did that to his house. At first I thought he was tearing it up - but the construction guys essentially gutted the place out, put in steel beams - did some foundation work, and are now in the process of patching it back together.

And speaking of the discovery channel - that was ironic that it was the day before. Good show planning... 😀

I didn't feel it at all. Didn't even realize there had been one until the news ticker scrolled by during the football game last night. Probably not much to feel from a 3.9 down here in San Jose anyway.

It was seriously the coolest thing I have ever experienced. I was walking back to my apartment and I hear some rumbling in the distance getting closer. I turn around looking for some speeding truck when the wave just swept under me and shook me up. I could feel the energy in it as it passed beyond me and moved on into the distance. Totally awesome...
