On a related note.
Did anyone happen to see the show on Discovery last night about they 1906 Quake?

At the time, the city fathers wanted to down play the severity of the quake (so as not to scare away potential new Business to the area) they reported only 400 something dead (it was closer to 5000+) Pictures in the papers were retouched so as not to show the extent of the damage. Because of insurance coverage most buildings were reported as being destroyed by fire and NOT the quake itself. After the quake building codes were relaxed to encourage San Fan to be rebuilt faster (they had some big wingding planned for 1912), so the buildings built afterwords are MORE unsafe than the ones destroyed by the quake!

My advice is if you live in San Fran. MOVE. The next BIG one is due anytime in the next 20 years or so!

A minor earthquake occurred at 6:39:54 PM (PDT) on Thursday, September 4, 2003.
The magnitude 3.9 event occurred 5 km (3 miles) SE of Berkeley, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 12 km ( 8 miles).

What a bunch of weenies........... Now Northridge was a Quake, and I cant wait to see the Discovery Channel documentary on that coverup.........

northridge was a freakin' quake! I live about 10 miles from the epicenter, I still remember it clearly even though I was only in fourth or fifth grade at the time. It knocked our house off the foundation!

no, he's correct, we are having a tropical storm. Yesterday morning, at about 5 am, a thunderstorm all of a sudden appears out of nowhere, lasts until like 5:30, soaks everything, then by 10:00 it's like 85 degrees outside.

Anyways, I've been in the 89 earthquake in the bay area, and the 1999 earthquake that struck China/Taiwan, when all the ram prices shot through the roof. The 1999 one, man... u know how crappy Taiwan buildings are? My dad pretty much described it like, in a normal earthquake, your house shifts horizontally, in the 1999 one, everything was going vertically (or vice versa, I can't remember).

I will bet my life salaries that Northridge was well above 7.0, maybe not 7.8 as that link suggests as I am not a geologist but having been in many major quakes I am certian that Northridge was much bigger than 6.9 as reported. My guess is the original 7.4 that floated around these parts for very long time and still even to this day.

The amount of damage and the way everything in every house and apartment was "centered", as in the couches, TV's, Books, Chairs etc... all piled up in the center of every room and hallway was not like it was in the Sylmar quake which was supposed to be the same size.

i was jamming with my band when it hit. we were playing so loud we just figured it was the amps until someone outside commented on it. 1200 watts can easily be confused for the earth shifting. :)

4.0 is nothing. Remember when the 4.9 hit and I posted about it? Everyone from Cali said "oh we don't even care if it is less than 6." Damn liars.
