What a surreal feeling WOW. My desk and floor started to rumble. For a moment it felt like something was going to drill out of my floor. I thought there was a major construction starting near me. I instantly got out of my basement closet and ran up to my wife in her throne. She happened to be on a zoom call and her coworkers throughout Long Island NY, Shorthills NJ all felt it.

Based on the Richter scale, this is probably a 3.5.

Never felt an earthquake but have felt rock blasting. It's a really weird feeling to have the whole ground shake under you, and it feels like it's very local like coming from the basement or something, even though it's not. With blasting it's more sudden and quick, like a bang. Apparently if they blast when it's foggy out, it can propagate further. They're normally suppose to wait if there's fog. Sometimes we do get seismic activity here caused by mining, although I never personally felt any of it. There has been some minor earthquakes underground that have actually shut down parts of the mine. There's mine tunnels pretty much all over the city, it's actually pretty wild how deep it goes. Like several CN towers worth.

A lot of earthquakes will feel like jolts. They're not all rolling; only the bigger ones (4.5 and above) seem to feel like they go on for any appreciable length of time. At least that was my experience living in Los Angeles for 9 years.

East Coast isn't normally earthquake prone is it? I don't recall hearing about quakes out there, especially NJ, NY area.

Woke me up from a sickness induced nap, I thought I was maybe hallucinating at first. My big palm tree was shaking, crib at the end of the bed smacking into the bed itself, stuff in the closet hitting the door. I think even the pipes in the wall next to me were hitting it. This lasted a good 20 seconds maybe so I eventually realized I wasn't making it up.

i was on the top floor of a new apartment building that we where renting in the Philippines when we got hit by a 6.5 , dad and i just laughing our asses off while two of the locals turned white as a ghost (found out later that these apartments where new because the previous ones had crumbled during a recent (20year) earthquake)

The only other experience i have is a few in the Dominican Republic which i could barely feel yet moved the walls enough to leave a fist sized gap

I've only ever felt jolts and those also the gently back and forth rocking kind. Didn't enjoy them at all coz they made me dizzy (my inner ear balance thingy is really bad). I hope never to find out what a real earthquake feels like. Not sure if I would even be able to get to safety due to the jolts making me all queasy and nauseous.

@BoomerD - I don't know this for a fact but I'm pretty sure that's how peeps in NYC look at NJ - we're the "bridge and tunnel" crowd. Although I guess that also applies to the other 4 burroughs.
