I am going to my mother's house right now. I am pretty upset about this so I am going to check things out. My stepfather is out of town so my mother is by herself.

Latest Update from area Seismic Graphs 4.9 Magnitude 1-3 Miles deep which is actually very shallow centered in Chatooga County Georgia NW corner of Georgia which is Cloudland Canyon.

The Canyon has sheer straight up and down vertical cliffs leading down to the river in Ft Payne Alabama. The Cliffs are home to launch points for Hang gliding.

The area has Dams for HydroElectic power built by the Tennessee Vally Authority.

Heading due East takes you into Rome Georgia then further east on Hwy 53 into Dawsonville (Birth Home of Nascar Driver Bill Elliot) then further east into Oakwood Georgia (Gainesville area) then Chestnut Mountain (where Donna and I are) and then I-85 which goes up to Clemson SC.

Edit: Last week we had a Tornado come right through the City of Atlanta as recorded by many Camera mounted on the TV Antenna Towers as well as the Traffic Helicopters.

Mother Nature putting on quite a show.

It was very surprising to have that kind of rumble here and lasted a lot longer than possibly thought. Donna lived in California for 5 years and experienced one that lasted only 5 seconds, she couldn't believe we rattled for at least 30 seconds here. It woke me up and I jumped up and said Earthquake right away, she didn't believe me at first and then when the windows starting rattling she did.

It was a small earthquake. There were no injuries or damage according to cnn. Why are you so worried?

USGS - Did you feel it? - Click on the link at the top of the page that says Did you feel it? Tell us! and report it from your location. Interesting to see how the perceived strength of the quake was felt by us in the southeast last night.

It woke both my girlfriend and I. For me, I was dead asleep and waking me up from my slumber is not an easy task, however mother nature has just proved otherwise.

I'm in Chattanooga....I think I felt it, but I slept through it. It's like a vague memory of a slight disturbance in the night...or something. I'm used to it. Fat people live in the apartment above me. :p

Sheesh, talk about overreacting.

An earthquake of that magnitude people don't even talk about here. I think we had one within the last month easily. *walks around scared* Oh no, California is going to fall into the ocean, oh no.

Who is overeacting? It's just unusual to have an event that you can feel so solidly in the SouthEast area.

Is a prime example of getting just a little too excited about this. Also his mother calling him, freaking *him* out enough because she was freaking out. This whole thread is a bit ridiculous. Granted there aren't a lot of earthquakes there, but come on? Wasn't even a five, most people probably slept through it.

Most people in the Metro Atlanta area felt it and most were waken out of their sleep except for very deep sleepers. If you had animals in your house there was no way you would not wake up from them going crazy. One of our cats kept running up and down the stairs, guess not knowing what to do.

I'm in Alpharetta (north of ATL) and it woke me up. I didn't feel anything, but I heard a crash of some sort that woke me and my dog up. It was pretty funny actually, because I thought it was someone trying to break in, so I was flipping on lights and checking stuff out. Never would have guessed it was an earthquake.

And for all you cool dudes in Cali reading this thread, we are not worthy. Your tolerance of earthquakes is amazing and we all look up to you. ;)

It's probably not the 4.9 quake that has people here in the Southeast nervous, but the prospect of another
New Madrid quake happening. Kinda like the nervous feeling we get when we see a big black cloud coming.....everyone checks the weather stations for tonadoes in the area.

I felt it in Clemson, SC (about 30 minutes across the Georgia border on I-85), about 2 hours from Atlanta. I woke up about 5am (right about the time this thread was started) because my bed was vibrating. My roommate, who stayed up all night, said he saw his monitor shaking visibly on his desk. When I got up, I said something about it and he said it felt like an earthquake. Ironic...
