I have been watching this story break and as this quake is going to affect a very populated coastal area, where some here may have relatives or friends, I wanted to at least post it.

My opinion is that nature strikes independent of man's best efforts and the consequences are all we can hope to respond to.

Earthquake Hits Indian Ocean, Tsunami Warning Issued

Bloomberg

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- A magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean today, spurring a tsunami warning for a half-dozen countries in the region.

The quake struck at a depth of 33 kilometers (21 miles) at about 1:55 a.m. local time and was centered 260 kilometers north of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, or about 825 kilometers west of Bangkok, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning will be in effect for the next one to three hours for parts of India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A magnitude-9.1 earthquake that hit off the coast of Aceh in northern Sumatra in December 2004 triggered a tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean, leaving more than 229,000 dead or missing from Southeast Asia to eastern Africa.

TOKYO (AP) - The Japan Meteorological Agency says a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has shaken Tokyo and surrounding areas. No casualties were immediately reported.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a large 7.6 earthquake in the Indian Ocean about 160 miles (257 kilometers) from India's Andaman Islands. A tsunami watch is in place for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh.

The USGS cautions that it is not known if such a tsunami has occurred.

Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning from the Japanese temblor early Tuesday, which centered off the Suruga Bay, southwest of Tokyo.

Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported that two nuclear reactors at the Hamaoka nuclear plant in Omaezaki, Shizuoka, were quickly shut down.

Central Japan Railway Co. has suspended operations of Shinkansen bullet trains, while the central government set up a task force at the prime minister's office, Kyodo reported.

The quake rattled furniture and walls in Tokyo but there have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

The quake occurred at a depth of 12 miles (20 kilometers). Public broadcaster NHK said a small increase of waves of some 10 inches (30 centimeters) was observed along the coastline of Yaizu City.

Local trains were temporarily halted for safety checks.

Wow, I think that is so cool! When do I get the invite to become an official mod?

Dude, I am trying to write a book and trying to run a business and am enjoying this forum as a sounding board for some meetings I am going to attend that deal with the issues I post about.

Do you feel that I am not posting serious commentary or do you just find the topics I post about are not to your personal taste or political persuasion?

AFAIK, you are free to post any topics you feel contribute to the general debate, aren't you? So feel free to do so!

And feel free to ignore me, you won't hurt my feelings at all!

We I'm not commenting as a Moderator, just another member. Be assured it's not against the rules but good forum etiquette (as if there is any in P&N) dictates that you not dominate the forum with multiple threads in such a short period of time. Feel free to be an annoying SOB if you wish by using this forum as your own personal blog.

Seriously?

Well it is the consensus opinion among scientists.

In terms of a tsunami potential, its probably going to depend on if the earthquake involves horizontal or vertical displacement on the fault line, but with the latter, the danger level is quite high. Early warning can save lives, I do not know about others, but I derive no joy seeing innocent people being killed. Mama nature is not always kind.

Be assured that I am only an intermittent poster and it may be years before I post again here. I just have a bit of time right now to indulge in this.

IMO, there are a lot of important things afoot right now, and a lot of irresponsible "change" is in the air. If it weren't, you would not see me become engaged in P&N.

Like a lot of people, I don't bother with matters that don't impact my personal or my business life, but when they do or are likely to, I get involved.

Posting here is just a debate amongst strangers. It can help form opinion or solidify an established one. The next step is doing more than talking, which is why I have been urging everyone to take the thoughts that are refined here to their elected representatives. That is where they might count.
