Earthlink DSL Sharing?

I picked up a DLink Router to share out my DSL connection, but cannot get the thing to pick up an IP address.

I select PPPoE and use my user name, however it still will not pick up a connection. I keep getting 0.0.0.0 for the WAN IP Address even after hitting connect. I've tried all variations of my username (i.e. jator, eln/jator, eln\jator, ELN/Jator, ELN/jator@earthlink.net) and nothing. Also tried cloning the MAC address of the computer I was connecting through.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

It has to be the user name and password.

Call Eatrhlink and make sure you have a current one.

"Earthlink will not support sharing of their DSL connection unless you use their hardware, etc".

Also, tehy charge $10 a month for it.

Earthlink DSL doesn't work with PPPoE enabled on the router because that's handled in the modem. Set your router to obtain its address through DHCP (or "Obtain Address Automatically") and you should be set.

Are you sure it's earthlink.net and not .com? I never had any issues with my mindspring account(sister company). Sharing is no problem either.

PPPoe is correct, username @earthlink.com and password should fly.

Welcome to the Forum ffsmak.

You probably are right.

However, as always it depends on where you are and how recent you got your hardware.

I.e, they have variety of settings across the big USA.

amdfanboy....they will if I sign up for their sharing plan at 9.95 a month. Not a favorable option in my opinion.

Zelmo3...tried that as well, still times out trying to obtain IP address.

ffsmak...I believe mindsrping is a .com domain (which is owned by earthlink), but all my other accounts with earthlink are .net (i.e. when I was on dialup)

JackMDS...Got the hardware today.

I think the PPPoE is not handled by the modem as I have to login via a web page (not from the modem IP address). When I plug my DSL modem into a laptop (not the original computer I got the DSL modem working on) I get a web page asking for a password because the connection is still tied to an alternative IP address. I have a feeling this has to do with the MAC address. However, I tried masking the MAC address from the original PC onto the Router and still no luck.

Any other suggestions/ideas?

Thanks.

I've been using earthlink for over 3 years with a SMC barricade. I never had a problem. The router is setup to connect as PPPoe and it with my username@earthlink.net and password. To troubleshoot further, install the software that they give you and connect the dsl modem directly to your PC and try to login and make sure your username and password is ok.

MAC address is a Cable thing not DSL.

The screen that you get, is it really on the Internet or you have one of these PPPOE ""poyee""! I.e. did you install their software?

As I said they keeping changing Modems and way of logging but in most cases the principle are.

Link to: DSL PPPOE and Cable/DSL Routers.

Well, I figured a work around.....

The DSL modem is handiling the PPPoE connection, I was able to log into it's page. On my router, I just checked StaticIP addresss and typed in the last IP address given to the computer and restarted the router and everything started working. Not sure what will happen after the lease is over (IPCONFIG says its a 24 hour lease when I checked on the computer earlier).

Thanks for the suggestions and I may be back.

amdfanboy....12 month commitment.

dmcowen...glad to see you 'old man'. I had a friend purchase a DSL modem from you a few months back. He likes it except he's a real newbie. I haven't been able to get over to his house to help him set it up (he's still using Bellsouth's USB modem).

BTW...what is VPI and VCI?

Thanks.

That's impossible..I set NAT router to use PPPOE with Earthlink DSL modem and it works just fine.

If the modem is a westell you might have to set it up in bridged mode. This will allow the router to do the PPPoE login.
