Earing - right or left ear?!

I remember hearing that gay guys pierce their right ear, and straight guys have their left ear pierced. Is this true?! Someone else told me that this "rule" is an early 90's thing and now it really doesn't matter. I'm asking because I may get my ear pierced.

thanks :)

if you are going to get your ears pierced, these days the "thing" to do is get them both done, not one. If getting one done is all you want, go left.

If you're a guy, neither left nor right is correct IMO. But I'm well outside the average 19 year old mindset so you should probably not listen to me. :p Aphex has the prevailing standard correct as far as I know.

I recall back in the mid-eighties a friend of mine was going to Antarctica for a 6 month job.He flew to New Zealand for Artic Traing, and preperation. He met his Roommate- and called the local "watering hole" back home "Guy's in which ear does it mean your gay?"
We thought it was the right ear, but figured out it would be more fun not to tell him- he'd find out on his own.........

I went to get my ear pierced a while ago, but the gun didn't go all the way through my ear, started to bleed profusely, and got lighted headed from lack of blood in brain.

just something to think about:p

Same here cept mine was about 7 years ago. Just wear a gold stud, because I think diamonds are too girlish and I'm not a pirate...so no loops for me. Plus something discrete is acceptable in the corporate workplace.

If you are really, really worried about possibly sending the wrong message...pierce the left ear, otherwise do whatever you think looks best...it really doesn't matter any more. I personally have a small hoop in each ear...I just like the way it looks. I got a LOT of sh*t for this back in high school tho (late 80s....I was the only guy with both ears done....reallly made my folks happy;)).

One note: getting cartilage pierced hurts a lot more than soft tissue, FYI.

Mine honestly didnt hurt at all. Granted, the sound of cartlidge crunching was a bit unnerving, but no pain whatsoever for me...

It used to be getting your ear pierced as a guy was a counter-culture kind of thing to do, but it's so standard that even Harrison Ford has a pierced ear. I second the motion to get both your ears pierced, that's the only "cool" way to go.

i dunno about you man, but i was pretty shocked at the sting (thought it wasnt going to hurt). course being a man, i just stopped chewing my gum, swallowed my saliva, and let the lady clean it up. ;)

Depends a lot on the skill of the person doing the piercing....I should have said may hurt more than soft tissue. My wife had her nose pierced and said it really didn't hurt at all*shrug*
