EA Sports to ?abandon physical media? in PC space

EA Sports president Peter Moore has told VG247 that the firm is moving away from PC SKU discs entirely.

?It?s not that we?re abandoning the PC as a platform for sports gaming,? Moore said, referencing a decision last year to drop most of EA Sports PC versions.

?You might say we?re abandoning the old model of physical media because we believe the future is online and connected.?

The exec added that announcements regarding EA Sports future policies on PC gaming would be made in the ?next few months,? but outlined that his PC games going forward would likely follow a micro-payment model.

?You?re going to see us take a lot of our learnings from what we?re doing with our games in Asia, where I?ll give you the game for free, or a certain level for free,? he said.

?And my hope is that you?re enjoying it that much that you?ll buy things and you?ll upsell. And then there?s no barrier to entry whatsoever.?

EA's answer to Steam?

Well they've had their Download Manager for a couple years. Maybe they're building upon that.

Hopefully by allowing users to re-download any of their purchased games for free instead of making them pay every couple years. Or at the very least, provide a simple and easy backup solution so you can always reinstall your purchased games even years later as long as you take the time to make a backup.

I like online game sales, but EA's online store will get no business from me unless and until they make it more user-friendly a la Steam.

They better offer their games through Steam and Impulse, because there's no way I'd ever buy a game directly from EA.

What if they changed their download service to allow unlimited downloads with no expiration date and an officially approved method of backing up your games, for free? Then it'd basically be Steam, except by EA.

I doubt they'll do that though.

Let me know when the become as customer friendly as Stardock, and then maybe I'll change my mind.

Their download manager is a buggy piece of shit. No way I'd buy stuff through that- just put it on Steam, Valve are actually quite competant.
