EA preparing C&C FPS

According to various sources, most notably the upcoming January issue of Game Informer, Electronic Arts is preparing a Command and Conquer-themed first person shooter.

The new game will probably be developed by EA's EALA studio, and it will be available for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox360. The most recent rumors claim that the game will be set 11 years after the third Tiberium war, and that players will take the role of Ricardo Vega, a retired GDI field commander called back to stop the latest Nod plan.

Additional information hints on squad-based action, common C&C unit types like infantry, missile infantry, Titan and Orca, missions which are based around Mediterranean Red Zone and special powers such as "orbital Slug." As you may already know, this isn't the first first person game in Command and Conquer series, but 2002 Westwood Studios' PC game, Renegade, received mixed reviews. Either you like the franchise or you don't. It's up to you.

I think there is room for a good C&C FPS, just like there is room for a good Starcraft FPS. But the developer is going to be key. It looks like EALA is making this? Which is former Dreamworks Interactive.

The only notable FPS games under their belts are Undying and Medal of Honor. Undying is a favorite of mine, but that doesn't really give me any proof that they plan to do something as amazing as it. Medal of Honor, on the other hand, has always struck me as an even more generic version of Call of Duty.

Here's hoping them the best of luck, if they had a developer like Valve making this or something, I'd probably be pretty damn psyched.

Renegade was neat, but not overly fantastic. Let's see what they do this time.

This could definitely be cool if it's pulled off right. By squad-based action, I hope they mean squads ala Battlefield 2. I've always thought that was a cool idea (when people take advantage of them correctly).

On my 56k modem, 200-400 pings, I was top 30 in the UK on Renegade on the first two months of it being released.

I just tore the place apart.

Hopefully they do a better job this time.

Renegade sucked testiculars... AND it's EA. This a lose-lose situation.

I would definitely be interested in this. I played Renegade a bit when it came out and it was fun but flawed. A FPS with some RPG and RTS elements would be awesome, like how Savage was done. It would probably play a bit like BF2 too since with the C&C universe there is definitely room for the infantry combat as well as vehicles and aircraft. Normally I wouldn't have much confidence with EA but they did a pretty damn good job with C&C3 and that is a tough task given how good the older ones were. Btw, where is Savage 2? I thought it was supposed to be released sometime this year.

squad based gameplay was something i really enjoyed in 2142 and sorely miss in cod4.

what an oversight by activision. many times in 2142 i joined random squads just pubbin that played as a cohesive unit, not to mention joining up with 4 to 5 clan-mates, now that was a joy.

If it's also released on Consoles that means what we already know for most of us PC gamers, that the PC version will have simplified Consoles-oriented User Interface, lack of controls customization for the keyboard and/or mouse, reduced textures quality, reduced polygons count, and you name them ...

I would GLADLY welcome a C&C-themed FPS ONLY if it was made exclusively for the PC, I'm just sick of the Console ports, it degrades PC gaming, in my opinion. Put things where they belong, Console-like games for Consoles and PC games ... for PC, simple. But I know, such a mentality isn't lucrative, it's always a question of money and quantity over quality and sense.
