I downloaded the demo for both of these games on PS3 and they are remarkable improvements over the previous years.

The EA sports games used to be a simple rehash every year from 99 through to 2007 with small changes and horrid graphics.

These games are AMAZING in comparison to the old breed of sport game. I guess the 2K sports games really made EA step up big.

I will purchase NHL 09 soon as it has a price drop or sale.

NHL has always seemed to withhold it's quality over the years. NBA Live, however, is a different story. I didn't particularly care for NBA Live 09 and thought it still had a ways to go, but it's better than previous years.

I was actually coming from PC perspective. NHL 09 blows for PC.

Ahhh, ok. From what I've gathered, it's been the preferred hockey game for the majority of the past few years.

From what I hear, until the 2009 games the 2k hockey games have been a bit better than the NHL series (for the past few years at least). Now though, EA whooped some 2k ass with NHL 09 which is played way too much between my roommates and I. It's a great game despite quite a few annoying bugs we run into because we play so much.

Only thing I don't like about Live 09: they removed the inbounds pass press steal loop from Live 05 (the last Live game I played). The loop was, make a shot against the CPU, get 3-4 human players lined up near the inbounds pass, and spam the steal button, steal the ball, make a shot, repeat, score 200 points in a game. Those were the days...

The last EA NHL game I played was NHL 99 for N64 with Eric Lindros on the cover. It was a respectable #3 in the Top 3 of N64 games that I owned, falling short of Goldeneye and Zelda: OT. I haven't played any console sports games since then, maybe I'll have to pick up NHL09 for PS3.

EA has owned in the NHL games since 07 IMO. That was the year they totally rebuilt it, added the skill stick, and revolutionized hockey games. 2K hasn't caught up since.
I did think NBA 2K was an amazing game though, last year and this. The graphics and atmosphere were incredible, and I HATE basketball. Got the game cheap though, and enjoyed it.

NBA 2k9 is still the better basketball game but NHL 09 is a much better NHL game. First EA sports game that I've recommended in a long time.

You don't like the fact that they made the game less broken?

That reminds me of NHL '98 though... there was an easy way to score every 7 seconds or so as long as you won the faceoff.

Actually think it's a wash between 2k and Live this year. Think 2k's association mode much deeper, better fast breaks, looks better. But Live's half-court game feels alot better, and less players sliding around. 2k gets edge for me due to association, but Live 2010 could overtake if they make a similar amount of progress.

NHL 98 was go down the wing on one side slapshot = instant goal
NHL 94 was wrap around = instant goal

Oh don't get me wrong, it's probably a better game now. Just thinking about the "good ol' days" of playing a season with my friends trying to average 200 points a game.

Yup

NHLPA 93 (yes, PA) also had the wrap around cheese.

I fired up dynasty mode.. playing 10 minute periods @ pro is challenging in fact but fun! I am not really composed in strategy so I don't do very well.
I need to learn how to dangle and spin...

Playing on rookie is far too easy and that means the lines never change (boo!)

I wish I'd gotten EA's NBA game this year. I got NBA 2K9 and it SUCKS!!! I had College Hoops 2k7, and the demo seemed fun, so I figured I'd pick it up - and dear god the gameplay is terrible, the AI is incredibly unrealistic, the way you play defense is ungodly annoying. This is the worst sports game I've ever owned.

NHL 09 with custom sliders on All-Star is the way to go. If anyone is interested i can post my sliders, but be warned, they are for *REALISTIC* gameplay, not run and gun arcade hockey. Its challenging, but man is it rewarding when you win by actually playing positional defense, cycling the puck, setting up the PP, etc.

I find PRO already so hard

I fired the game up with some buddies 3v2 action with 3 ps3 controllers and 2 pc controllers. Was tons of fun
