Indeed. I don't mind this trend, as you can shut off the programs from running in the background. The only thing I don't like is that we won't see a price reduction from the lack of resources consumed to make packaging/cd/manual/etc. Oh well, I guess games are getting more expensive anyhow, not much I can do about it.

As an avid PC gamer I just have to say, fvck EA and FvCK Microsoft too!!! I will buy a PS3 and sell my gaming PC to buy an Email machine and a PS3 if they pull this crap. I would rather deal with the limitations of a console than deal with that kind of 8ull5h1t.

It seems natural to me that a software publisher would resort to means such as these to gain control over their abstracts, but it's likewise natural for me as a consumer to resent the increasing hassles they create for us.

I'm not sure how I'm going to respond in the long run, but at present I'm not buying such products.

It would be a great idea if you could have some sort of centralized account where you purchase licenses for games/apps. But as it stands now we're going to have multiple sites/apps/accounts to download each companys apps/game/whatever.

If I had the cash I would try to become some kind of e-seller for these. But the bandwidth requirements would be huge!

I think Steam clients are a damn good idea. They allow the developers to circumvent the publisher and distribute their own games, and gain all the profit for themselves.

As long as you can simply exit the client or set it not to load on startup, then there is no problem.

Good thing the vast majority of new games coming out these days suck, that way I'm not affected as much.
Maybe if someone comes up with something good it'll be nice and all, but if EA's/MS's turn into two new versions of Steam, they can forget any of my money.

Of course, I detest EA and wouldn't dream of buying any of their games anyway, and MS doesn't really publish any games that interest me, so no biggie for me.

Sweet I can't wait for my new sports game for the year 20XX. I just hope it has better graphics, or new features or...wait this is EA. I'll pass.

EA sucks balls anyway. I mean, what am I really going to miss out on?

And I actually like steam, but I know some people have had problems with it.

I think the biggest problem is that people have had problems with Steam.
Now EA want to make a similar system.
Anyone else see the obvious big thing?
Steam from Valve doesn't work 100%
No EA game has ever worked 100%
Steam type thing from EA = big pile of stinky bugs which will totally mess up and not work at all properly for 90% of PC users.

steam works great for me. however, anything EA touches is destined to have problems for years after release.

I hated Steam at first, but once u get used to it it's actually pretty good. How many games give u updates/bug fixes practically EVERY WEEK? Certainly EA dosn't, their patches are few, and far between. My only gripe is that u need an internet connection to get HL2 installed. I also enjoy an external game browser that ACTUALLY works, unlike *cough cough* BF2.

It would be nice if Microsoft developed a client that these other companies could utilize. Sort of like MSI packages.

As long as programs dont:

1) Steal enough RAM, network bandwidth or CPU/GPU cycles to be noticable.

2) Dont spam me with popups. Giving me options to disable/customise as I see fit.

3) Create security issues.

I dont have much problem with it.

Automatic game updates and quick-links to up-and-coming games would be the biggest bonus for me.
