EA extends NFL license to 2013

Redwood City, Calif.-based EA said Tuesday that it would be extending its exclusive deal with the National Football League and NFL Players Club until the end of the 2012 season, which ends in February 2013.

The deal extension means that EA will continue to hold the exclusive rights to develop, publish and distribute handheld, PC and console games with real NFL players, stadiums and teams for the next five years.

EA signed the original five-year exclusivity deal with the NFL in 2004, causing a wave of controversy, as the agreement effectively disallowed other NFL licensed games?namely Madden NFL rival NFL 2K?from releasing.

EA will also have access to content from NFL Films and the NFL Network. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 20-year-old Madden NFL franchise continues to be a top-selling franchise for EA, and has generated over $2 billion in retail sales.

?This is all about bringing authenticity and realism to NFL videogames," said Eric Grubman, president of NFL Ventures.

?Game quality is our top priority, and we're committed to pushing our gameplay innovation, connecting football fans via rich online experiences and delivering the most visually stunning sports games on the market,? said EA Sports president Peter Moore.

Good luck with that Pete.

2K's offerings this generation have been less than spectacular, but this deal always made me angry anyway.

2K games in general seemed to take a hit after 2K lost the NFL license. Their NBA offering is still better than EA's though IMHO.

In other news, EA extends my boycott of the Madden series of games for another 4years. Too bad there are enough sheeple that shell out for the newest edition each year, which basically makes my boycott a non-issue for EA.

I can understand why EA Games is afraid of competition, but I don't understand why the NFL will sell out it's fans so cheaply.

Agreed, at least with football/basketball. All pro 2k8 could have been far better. It's almost exactly like 2k5 (meaning, it's still better than Madden, but they should have improved it). I like 2k basketball.

I have been a long time supporter of 2kSports, formerly Visual Concepts, since NFL 2K and only buy 2k sports games because I do not approve of EA's Microsoft tactics.

Madden 08 is an upgrade over Madden 07 (for the next-gen systems), but it still blows compared to the previous-gen version. They didn't just get complacent after they got this license, they made the game considerably worse.

I've owned every Madden since 1999 (in some cases, more than 1 copy). If next years' isn't AT LEAST as good as Madden 06 for PS2/Gamecube/XBox, I won't be buying it.

Fuck EA Sports. Now that they got rid of Fight Night, every game they make is garbage.

I miss fight night but am definitely looking forward to the replacement. Facebreaker, right?

I don't even care anymore. As long as we have a Pacman Jones cover everything will be okay next year...

Keep the curse strong EA.

Great. No competition. Well at least Peter Moore is in charge over there so they hopefully will innovate with the Madden franchise.

I dont think they should be allowed to do this. As many devs should be able to use the license if they want to.

i must say though recently i gave madden 08 a chance and it is for sure 1 solid game.

Were you high when you were playing that piece of crap?

I agree with him, Madden 08 was a solid offering. It's unfortunate that it took them 3 tries on the new-gen consoles to put out anything worth a damn. Madden 06 and 07 were a complete shame.

...and it's sad that this is considered a "solid offering". Yes, it's worlds ahead of Madden 07, but the gameplay still sucks ass compared to the last gen. Not to mention the presentation is terrible, and what the hell happened to the announcers?? Who actually likes the terrible radio announcer?

I haven't played a Madden game in a while. Other than the BS exclusive deal with the NFL, what's the major gripes about EA's Madden '08?
