didn't bother me one bit since i purchased most of my games new anyways. i actually thought it was a pretty smart move.

it would be funny if they are stopping this because the "online pass" concept will be universal on all the next gen consoles.

I thought this would blow up in their face when they first started it.

Here's phase 2 since the phase 1 experiment failed. They'll now have special "perks" for the online components that requires a special code. For instance, you get extra vehicles or weapons in a FPS that gives you a tactical advantage. Yeah, you can play online but good luck with your peashooter and potato gun when someone has a machine gun and bazooka.

My first thought was I wonder what shittier idea they come up with to replace it. Maybe that's just the pessimist in me, but it is EA so...

It doesn't matter they already made a shit load of money from selling the online pass for $10

Simple realization, they make more money from you with DLC than they do from an online pass.

I don't know a single person who bought an online pass. Even when I had roommates, we all wanted to play NCAA Football 2012, and rather than just buying the $10 online pass when my friend bought the game, the other two of us bought a copy of the game.

maybe we're both just cynical as my first though was "great, that just means something is coming that's even worse so they don't have to bother"

But maybe it really was that unpopular though. At least on the sports side it seems like enough of a "punishment" for used sales that they don't get any further roster updates after the next year comes out.

Is it possible this is in anticipation of the Microsoft announcement today? Maybe MS will do their work for them and now allow used games?

This seems to be the reason from what it seems to me.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/21/4352314/xbox-one-hard-drive-game-installs

The Verge said:
Prior to the Xbox One's official unveiling, rumors had flown for months that Microsoft's latest console would contain a mechanism to block used games. While Microsoft has so far stayed quiet on this particular point, the mandatory installation would seem to suggest that it may well be the case — at least to some extent. Microsoft has said that a fee would be charged for any game disc to be tied to a second Xbox Live account following its initial installation.

Not confirmed yet but it sounds very plausible to me.

wow it's truly incredible how quickly the spread of mis-information spreads now a days. all of these articles are linking back to the wired article, where they are totally speculating, yet everyone is claiming it's confirmed. fucking ridiculous.

Posted a link in the Xbox One thread. MS has already confirmed Wired is full of shit.
