Hello,

Is anyone overclocking E8600 here? What sort of overclock could I expect?

3330mhz with PC5300 & some knowledge of OC'ing 10 x 333 = 3.3ghz . ~3400 - 3900mhz is possible if the ram overclocks well. You really should have 1000 or 1066mhz DDRII, aka PC2-8500.

does the e8600 run okay on the 965 chipset?

Seems to run ok I sort of botched overclocked it to 4ghz until i realised vcore was at 1.51v lol so i put it back at stock

did you have your PC2-5300 running at 400mhz? What were the timings?

yea im with jared. if you want a good OC on that chip upgrade the ram to 1066. you might run into a bottleneck on the motherboard also but you could always just replace that as well if you really want to lol. ram + mobo is cheap these days.

Yeah the ram was running at 400 i did look at the timings in cpu z but i can't remember them they were like 1 higher each than at 333 i think. Anyway can't i just use a memory divider or something?
I'd rather not replace the ram and mobo as i've just spent all my money on the cpu and heatsink :/

You generally can't run dividers lower than 1:1 if you want 400 MHz, the RAM will be running at 400 MHz minimum, which is well above their current rating.

I know it's too late now, but you could have saved money on a heatsink and used a $25-40 HSF instead of the $55+fan TRUE and spend the extra $25 on 2 gigs RAM that will overclock better. RAM is really cheap right now, and most DDR2-800 will at least get you to 400-425 FSB without trouble, which is a respectable enough overclock for an e8600.

Did you leave the voltage settings on Auto?? I think that is why it went up so high. You need to ALWAYS manually set your voltages.

@ Cheex yeah i left everything on auto 'cept the fsb I set to 400. Still at least I only ran orthos for one hour till I realised lol

I'm doing pretty well with mine. I just finished doing stress testing with Intel Linpack/IntelBurn Test (first five runs, then ten runs), and 3 hours of OCCT and the system is passing with flying colors. This is after bumping my system up to 4.12 GHz from 4.07. Yeah, auto voltage is not going to do it. Evidently, from what I keep hearing, you can have a system that passes Prime or OCCT but does not pass IntelBurnTest. MY 8600 is running great right now, but a lot of people buying this chip are not gonna get the 4.4 GHz on air and stock voltage that some people have been babbling about since these chips came out.

I have my BIOS set to 1.35V CPU and I forget what my NB voltage is, but I had to bump it up one notch as well. So far the system is looking quite good. I will not bump the voltage up any more. My temps are quite reasonable too.

Also, disable C1E in the BIOS.

Nice. I'm having trouble overclocking mine at all atm. It seems with the 1803 bios I'm using whenever I set the vcore it sets itself back to auto. I must be doing something wrong. I don't expect there many (any?) using a P5B-E here?

I would swap out the PC5300 RAM stat. At least get some DDR2-800 sticks so you can run at a nice smooth 400 MHZ FSB. The stuff is so cheap it's criminal. Then try using the 9 multiplier and set the FSB at 400. 3.6 should be absolutely nothing, and 3.8 should be really easy. I had no significant OC issues until I went beyond 10x395 FSB, which is where I started to have heat problems. The 8600s do not have as much headroom as the E8400/E8500s do... I feel fortunate to have a pretty stable 4.12 GHz. Had to use two 120mm fans on the CPU with a case mod to keep temps down, though. I refuse to use water.

Is there a newer BIOS you can try? If so, DO NOT - I repeat DO NOT - use Asus' own software utilities to update the flash BIOS. I turned my mobo into a brick that way and had to send it in for repair. This was just before I installed the 8600. Sure enough, the boneheads did not install the current 45nm BIOS as I had requested when they sent it back to me; they installed the same old one. (Their customer service is pretty good, though.) I had to use the BIOS' own updating utility. Sure enough, it worked. The thing screams now.

The max voltage spec from Intel is 1.3625V. I have mine at 1.35 and I would not dare put it any higher.

Yeah I used the bios update with a flash drive as I 'd read about people bricking there motherboards with the windows utility. Yeah I may consider some new ram as it is very cheap atm even in the uk. Although it seems my motherboard has a fsb hole up to 400 and the bios is a bit buggy with regard to setting vcore voltages although I've worked out how to do it now, the bios actually won't let me set anything higher than 1.3625v even though it set it to 1.5 on auto mode.
