I'm not sure exactly how people/review sights are measuring the power consumption of processors, vid cards etc. but can this article be right?
33.4watts under full load for an e8500?

review at X-bit labs

I'm researching power consumption for the 500w Enermax PSU in my 8400 machine.

Other components in the machine:
150 WD Raptor
7200 rpm 500Gb ST3500630NS drive
2x 80mm fans
1x120mm fan
dual slot cooler fan
Sound card
Zalman 9500

i am thinking the 500 will be enough but researching cause i'm curious and concerned

TDP is 65W but if you overclock it to 4GHz, you'll be looking at ~120W, which is 10A on the 12V rail. Is your video card the one in your sig? You can get by on a quality 380W power supply then. If you want one that will support multi-gpu configs in the future, look to a Corsair 620HX or PC Power & Cooling 750W. If there's no need for SLI/Crossfire, try a lower rated Corsair (buy.com); 520HX is a popular choice.

I believe you're taking the wrong interpretation of TDP there.

According to the wiki:
The Thermal Design Power (TDP) (sometimes called Thermal Design Point) represents the maximum amount of power the cooling system in a computer is required to dissipate.

65W TDP simply means that's the maximum amount of heat it should produce, not the amount of power it actually consumes. Those Xbitlabs figures look about right, I believe.
According to the Gigabyte DES utility (before I overclocked and uninstalled it) said my CPU was idling at just around 1w and was using 4w doing slightly more CPU intensive tasks.

I probably won't do any crossfire setup. The X1900XTX does fine at the stated resolution and I don't intend on upgrading to a bigger monitor anytime soon unless there are 2ms response time 24" widescreens with 10000:1 contrast going for under 145$

So, I am well under the specs of my 500w Enermax by the cpu and video card?

EDIT: and btw, when did Corsair, and all these other PSU makers become more popular than one the oldest PSU makers in the business?

great link man, thanks - that also helps me out with my Q9300 :)

Cheers!

EDIT: another thing, why are people buying such high wattage PSUs when the direction of watt/power consumption is lowering? or am i wrong and its just the opposite?

Partly because people don't understand how much power they actually need, and partly because PSU manufacturers are marketing bigger PSUs. Ever notice nobody advertises their 300-400W models? Most of the banners you see are for the 700-800W, even 1000W PSUs.

Edit: Same way that RAM manufacturers aren't advertising their DDR2-667 lines. Ads are for at least DDR2-800, often more like DDR2-1066 or DDR3.

Corsair did a great job, and so now there are all these n00bs who think Corsair is the best thing since sliced bread.

Just for kicks, I've got a 430w Antec NeoHE powering all of this:

E8400 @ 3.9Ghz
8800GT OC'd with Accelero cooler
Abit IP-35E
2 x 1GB sticks of DDR2
2 SATA HDs
DVD burner
Firewire PCI card
5 - 120mm fans and a single 80mm fan
All of the rear USB ports are used, but some have external power

Granted, that's really not that much, but there's plenty around here that would say 430w isn't enough just based entirely on the 8800GT.
