Heh, reminds me of that video on Toms where they removed the HSF on an AMD Tbird (and let the blue smoke out).

Anyway.. On P5Q-Pro I left the Vcore on "auto", and left the "speed step" stuff alone, it underclocks at idle as it's supposed to...

With 3.2 or 3.3Ghz Vcore is about the same.

Idle (2.1 - 2.2Ghz) = 1.256
Load (3.2 - 3.3Ghz) = 1.264 (both round to 1.26 :)

For reference, at stock 3.0 (2.0 idle) = 1.1x idle, 1.2x load (I forget exactly, but a bit lower than OC).

The 8600 will not be a very large improvement at stock speeds over the stock speeds of the 8400. It will be an improvement, but in all actuality you will not even notice unless you are benching or watch your FPS like a hawk. No offense intended, but you do not appear to be the type of person who would be doing either of these things. If you really want to learn what to do, just do some reading. Overclocking will be different for every chip, for every mobo, for every GPU even if they came from the same batch.

Otherwise, I say just run your stuff stock as it was intended and enjoy the very nice parts you have.

Well, not really for most situations, but if you were gaming at a very high resolution with Crysis and details on extreme, etc, MAYBE.

Hey guys let's be a bit nicer to the new dude. He's trying to learn. So AMD Phenom how do you usually OC your AMD cpus? I think I can explain the Intel stuff based on the way you OC your AMDs. Maybe that will be a quicker path for you.

nyker LMAO that was a good read. one the only amd i have ever owned was a AMD Athlon 3400+ i had no clue about overclocking. i still have that cpu but its in my parents computer right now. im askin these question cuz im saving to build my own. so i just wanted to make sure im getting good stuff and everything will work withone another. i cant post my whole setup im saving up for if you would like. but i dont think im goin to be overclocking. to much work and you have to constantly check your comps temps. to much :(

The initial work with overclocking is in the beginning when you first build the PC. Figure about a week's worth of testing and tweaking. Then you're good to go. But if you're not willing to read up thoroughly on OCing beforehand though, you will not be prepared when things go wrong (PC fails to POST, suddenly reboots, graphical anomalies, etc). My suggestion is you run it at stock until you've gathered enough information that you're comfortable.

This isn't rocket science btw. It's a lot of fun if you like to tweak and push your system to explore its limits.

if you just doing this on paper, I think it will be very hard for anyone here to "show" you what to do. without an actual machine in front of you it is quite difficult to explain. it's like learning how to play tennis without playing with it for real, you'll only vaguely understand it no matter what people say.

yea i just realized that :( i wont have this build till like end of nov!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! i want it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so for this ocing i use cpu-z. then to test to see what i did i use prime95. then i use realtemp to monitor my temps?? also if i oc a e8600 to idk anywhere from 3.6 - 4.0 can that run stable 24/7 on air. my case will be the thermaltake armor plus! thanks for replys
